8 TECH J

After a four year hiatus, It has been great to see students enjoying Textiles Technology lessons again at MCS. Year 8 have been enthusiastic learners, developing their skills in safely using the sewing machine to undertake a range of construction techniques. They have also been using their creative flair, experimenting with decorative textile techniques including mono-printing, tie-dyeing and using paint sticks and stencils on fabric. These skills will be consolidated as students complete their ‘snack pillow’ practical project.

YEAR 9 & 10 FOOD TECHNOLOGY

Year 9 Food Technology has been completing their unit of work on ‘Food Equity’ this term. They are exploring the reasons for food inequity throughout the world, the groups who are most at risk and the consequences of food inequity. They have also been continuing to develop their skills in safe and hygienic food preparation by preparing a range of low-cost meals using several staple foods.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Food Technology has enjoyed their unit on ‘Food for Special Occasions’ this term, learning about the reasons for special occasions and the importance of food at such events. During practical lessons the students have prepared foods for special occasions and learned some skills in cake decorating. Students are looking forward to their practical assessment task where they are designing and making their own celebration cake.

YEAR 12 HOSPITALITY

Year 12 Hospitality has been kept busy completing their cluster units of work and continue to develop their practical skills. During Term 1, students served espresso coffee to staff each Tuesday, and this term they are serving up a range of non-alcoholic beverages. Participating in weekly service periods allows students to improve their confidence and skills in a range of practical areas, including order taking, preparation, presentation and service of a range of beverages and food items. Year 12 will continue to work on completing their units of competency, as they aim towards achieving their Certificate II in Hospitality.
