Student Achievement: David Brown to Represent Australia

We are so excited to share that Year 12 student, David Brown, will represent Australia at the Australian Science Olympiads in August. This week it was announced that David will compete against students from all over the world as part of the 2023 International Earth Science Olympiad Team.

David's journey towards this incredible achievement began with an outstanding result in the Year 10 Olympiads in 2020. David was selected for various Australian Science Innovations programs as a result. He then made it to the Earth Science Olympiads National Summer School this past January and was vying for a place in the International Olympiads for 2023.

Tasmanian All Schools Cross Country

This week’s PE adventure led us to the All Schools Cross Country event held at Symmons Plains. We faced the cold, frosty morning with a group of keen students ready to participate in an all Tasmanian School event. Congratulations to all who attended. A special congratulations to Samuel Strating (Yr 8) who placed 1st in the Under 15 Boys race, Sadie Armstrong (Yr10) who placed 5th in the Under 17 Women’s race, Alex Short who placed 8th in the Under 18’s race. Samuel and Sadie both qualified for Nationals in Canberra which is a huge achievement!

Thank you again to the students who chose to brave the cold, to the parents who came to support and cheer, and to our good God who provided us with safety and the opportunity to engage in this awesome event.

Mr Bosker and Miss Connors.

Junior School Choir Performance

The whole Junior School enjoyed a time of performing the Launceston Competition songs. This is a special opportunity to see the other choirs perform. Unfortunately, the limited capacity of the PAC meant that we were not able to invite parents to come along. Recording the performances breaks copyright laws, so we just have photos to share.

Well done to all of the Junior School students for the diligence demonstrated in their learning, practising and performing at such a high standard.

Prep students are looking forward to joining in with the ½ choir in Semester 2.

Student Achievement: Hugh Kerrison

Year 4 student, Hugh Kerrison, placed second in the state tournament in Hobart last month for GKR Karate.

Hugh is off to Nationals in November in Brisbane, and we wish him all the best in the tournament. Congratulations, Hugh!

Culinary Cook-Off

As part of the preparations for a multi-day winter hike into the Cradle Mountain National Park, the Outdoor Leadership students competed in a Master Chef challenge. The meals that were cooked during this challenge will be the same as what will be cooked at Scott-Kilvert Hut next week.

Outdoor Leadership is one of the many subjects we offer to our Senior School students. It prepares learners for a wide range of future study and vocational destinations by developing transferable leadership skills that can be taken into everyday life and the work environment to foster active citizenship and make contributions to the wider community.

Outdoor Leadership provides a rich context in which to convey and explore a Biblical world view of the work of God in our lives; how people can do and should interact; stewardship of creation; and the nature of God as he reveals different aspects of Himself to us.

Year 6 Floor Plan Design Project

The Floor Plan Design Project in Year 6 encourages students to be creative and problem solve, as they learn about the design process in this realistic project. Students become housing designers, and as you can see by the photos, this hands-on unit is really enjoyable!

Students are given a realistic brief, and after careful planning their technical drawings are transferred to MDF board. Walls are measured, cut, and sanded, as students assemble their 3D floor plan.

Staff Vs Students Netball Game

We have some talented students from Yr 8 - Yr 12 that are a part of our NSATIS Netball Firsts Team for 2023. We needed to put them to the test and give them some good, healthy, fun competition before they hit the courts next term, so staff generously signed up to play them at lunch time this past week. The atmosphere was electric, as spectators cheered them on. It was a very close game, but the staff members beat the students by 2 points! Congratulations to all who participated!

Itinerant Music Teachers 2023

LCS has a number of instrument teachers who take students for individual lessons at school during school hours. This is an excellent way to learn an instrument and can help students make much faster progress on their instrument. It is recommended that student’s seriously contemplating studying music from grades 9 onwards definitely consider having some private instrument tuition to further their overall music advancement. Any student in grades 5 – 8 who are serious about starting an instrument should also have lessons in order to learn crucial proper technique early in their playing life.

Students continuing lessons from last year will be individually contacted by their teachers to organise lessons for the year.

If you would like your child to start having lessons this year, please email Mr Stewart (stewartp@lcs.tas.edu.au) and include the following details;

  1. Students name:
  2. Class:
  3. Instrument to have lessons on:
  4. Contact phone number:
  5. Your contact details (phone and email)

This will be passed on to a relevant teacher who will contact you for further details.

We currently have teachers available for the following instruments:

  • Piano/keyboard
  • Clarinet/saxophone and Flute
  • Guitar
  • Bass
  • Brass (trumpet etc)
  • Voice
  • Drums

Note for the office

ABSENCES/ATTENDANCE

Communication regarding a student’s absence needs to come via the school office. This information will then be passed on to the student’s teachers. Parents are asked where possible to telephone the school or email the office in advance when a student will be absent.  If you subscribe to the mobile app, The Hub you can also lodge an electronic absentee form which will reach the office immediately.  The school telephone number is (03) 6327 2854 and email is office@lcs.tas.edu.au

Students who are late must sign in at the school office.  Students will be issued a ‘late pass’ that must be presented to their teacher.  Students who sign in ‘late’ must have a note of explanation from home.   Three unexplained late arrivals will result in a detention.

Yr11/12 students that have a study period in the morning and do not attend Class Teacher must sign in at the office as soon as they arrive at school, if students have not signed in whole day absences will be on their record. Yr 11/12 students may leave the school grounds during study periods, however they are required to sign out and back in at the office.  This is important, particularly in the case of an emergency, so students can be accounted for by the staff and emergency services.

Written permission is required to leave the school grounds during school hours (except Year 11 & 12).  Students are to meet parents at the office. All students must use the sign out folder at the student counter in the main office.  When students return to school, they should report to the student counter in the main office and sign in.

If families intend to be absent from school due to extended holidays (3 days or more), parents need to fill out in advance an Application for Extended Leave for Travel form, found under the Parents and Students/Downloads & Policies tab on our website:  www.lcs.tas.edu.au(Please see Extended Leave Policy on next pages)

MEDICATION

Should your child need to take prescribed medication at school please inform the school office.  All medication, both prescription and over the counter medication, needs to be in original packaging and labelled with clear dosage instructions (prescription medication needs dosage instructions from a registered medical practitioner) and must be administered at the school office and students are not permitted to carry medication at school. Medical forms are sent home at the beginning of each school year and parents are able to indicate whether they give permission for paracetamol to be administered if required.

UNIFORM

Students who are not in correct uniform, wrong jacket or coloured socks etc must get a uniform pass from the office.  A note of explanation should be provided by parents.  Three uniform non compliances, without parent explanation, will result in a detention.
