It was a very sad start to this week for the St Virgil's College Community following the long weekend. As most of you will have read and seen, Old Virgilian, Kane Symons (SVC 2010-17), tragically lost his life in the Hunter Valley on Sunday night. Kane and his family, parents Stephen and Sarnia, and sister Jamie, moved to Tasmania when Kane was in Year 1 and Jamie, Year 3, commencing their schooling at St Mary's College. Kane then continued his schooling at St Virgil's, forging many lifelong friendships with his Year group. Jamie is now a member of staff at Senior School. Our fondest of memories of Kane are of an energetic, loving, forever smiling, beautiful boy. As a staff we gathered in prayer this week for our colleague, Jamie, and for the repose of the sole of Kane. We have included a photo of Kane above with his Year 3 classmates from the All Schools Triathlon in 2010.
Today our Cross-Country team competed in the Annual JSSATIS Cross Country event at Rokeby Police Academy. Each Year level had eight boys running. Some reserves were called on to run due to illness. Good luck to Mrs Karryn McCullagh and the SVC team.
Our SVC team is:
Year 3: Jack Kilgour, Harry Stanton, Winston Whittle, Rafe Glenn, Max Free, Hugo Helmers, Jaxon Pyke, Panayioti Hiras. Reserves: Ethan Washington, Sam Houston, Ben Houareau, Archie Bugg.
Year 4: Lewis Finlay, Archie Argyrolopous, Alex Pritchard, Oliver Wagstaff, Hugo Rickards, Liam Hazi, Lochie Johnstone, Cash Salter. Reserves: Clancy Gillie, Edward Pigden, Nate Debnam.
Year 5: Angus Newsham West, Oscar Halton, Toby Sperring, Liam Holliday, Patrick Moloney, Tom Brown, Archer Kilgour, Lucas Ravani, Reserve: Max Marsden.
Year 6: Alex Mizzen, Finaly Child, Winston Marriner, Ben Pigden, Rhys Pinnington, Xavier Rickards, Xavier Houston, Euan McLeod. Reserves: Charlie Booth, Jack Lemm, Max Drew.
Our next P&F Meeting is on Monday 19 June at 4.30 pm at the Junior School. All are welcome.
Friday 30 June
As part of the annual College Mary Rice Day at the Austins Ferry campus, over 900 students and staff will be treated to a portion of a traditional African ‘Maharagwe Mchele Mkate’ (bean rice bread) dish.
The dish is prepared by a team of College staff, P&F members and volunteers, and served at lunch time across two stations.
The P&F are seeking volunteers from the Junior and Senior School communities to assist with food preparation, cooking, set up, serving and pack up. Volunteers require a current Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) card.
If you are available to assist for any period of time between 9.00 am and 1.30 pm on Friday 30 June, please SignUp Online.
On the shortest day of the year, Thursday 22 June, we invite students and staff to take part in SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY Shorts Day. Shorts Day is dedicated to promoting positive mental health and encourages individuals to seek help when needed.
Students and staff at the both campuses are encouraged to wear their craziest shorts, socks and beanies for a gold coin donation. Sport uniform must be worn to and from school - shorts to be changed into at school.
Please Donate by 21 June!

Formal Uniform
In Term 2 and 3, our boys are expected to wear their jumper to school. The jumper is to remain on until recess. Our Junior School environment is quite cold, particularly in the mornings. The added layer of warmth is to keep the cold out and the boys warm. During these terms, the boys are also permitted to wear their soft-shell jacket over their jumper as an additional layer of warmth. It must not replace the jumper and can be worn instead of the blazer once they are at school. Beanies must not be worn with the formal uniform, sports only.
Sport Uniform
During Term 2 and 3, boys are to wear their full tracksuit to and from school on sport uniform days. The beanie may only be worn with their sport uniform.
We are very proud of our water polo team, playing last Friday evening in Round 6. With the long weekend as well as illness, we played with one player short against an experienced South Hobart team. The boys rose to the challenge, with 6-6 score at half time and an end result of 10–7 loss. Mr Debnam sat on the bench with Mrs Messer and we were both impressed with the ‘never give up’ attitude from the team. Atticus, our regular goalie, put in a determined effort, scoring two goals as a goalkeeper! Nate scored three with Oscar and Bailey scoring one each.
Players of the Week
All 6 boys: Kieran Bosworth, Bailey Siddall, Oscar Halton, Lucas Ravani, Atticus Johnson Harrington and Nate Debnam.
Round 5
SVC was defeated by Bellerive/Montagu Bay, 6-15.
Encouragement Award: Lucas Ravani
Player of the Week: Atticus Johnson Harrington
With a bye this week, we have one game to go on 23 June against Taroona.
