Year 1 Report

Term 4 2021

Term 4

Well done to all Grade One students on finishing up another interesting and enjoyable year of school! We wish all students and families a safe and happy break. We hope to see you all in the new year!

Numeracy

In Numeracy, Grade One students learnt about the concept of chance and probability remotely at the beginning of Term Four. They were able to identify and describe everyday events that involve chance and use the language ‘will happen’, ‘won’t happen’ and ‘might happen’ to describe the chance of an event occurring. When students returned to school, they consolidated their understanding of Place Value by writing and making 2-digit numbers. They were provided with opportunities to make numbers using bundling sticks, order, and place 2-digit numbers on number lines from 0 to 100. Students then revised telling time on the hour and half hour on analogue and digital clocks. They revised the features of a clock, practiced drawing the hands to write the time and matched analogue to digital clock times. This led into our unit on Fractions which was taught at the end of Term Four. Students connected their understanding of half from telling time to the half hour on analogue clocks. They extended their understanding of fractions to dividing shapes and collections of objects into halves. Students explored the concept of fractions by dividing whole shapes and collections in half to represent two equal parts of a whole.

Reading

In Reading, Grade One students have further developed their understanding of the structure of fairy tales by summarising and retelling the different events that occur in each story. They have compared different versions of fairy tales and analysed character traits of different fairy tale characters such as Goldilocks and Little Red Riding Hood.

To end the fairy tale unit, students have become involved in reader’s theatre! Students have been working on their fluency whilst reading scripts, using different types of expression, listening to one another and speaking loud and clearly. Students have also started to make finger puppets with some of their favourite fairy tale characters. To end the term, students will be participating in a fairy tale dress up day where they will be involved in different fairy tale activities and games!

Writing

In Writing, Grade One students continued to retell familiar fairytales. Students then wrote their own fairy tales creating characters and settings, as well as including a problem and solution and tying in their ending with the beginning of their story. Students also sequenced fairy tales and made individual booklets to read at home. During the last few weeks of the term, students have begun learning how to write letters and have even written a letter to their 2022 teacher. In addition to these writing tasks students have engaged in a variety of other writing experiences including making chocolate crackles, a 'giant’s face' mask and a royal crown. Students should be very proud of their efforts in writing this term.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, Grade One students have been focusing on the topic, ‘Visiting Victoria.’ Firstly, students learnt where they live at a local, state and country level. Next, we discussed, in detail, some of the special places students have visited in Victoria and compared how some of these places are the same and different. Students also engaged in conversations about what makes these places significant and interesting and why people like to go there. Students also experienced using ‘Bee Bots’ to understand the concept of locating important landmarks and places on a map of Melbourne, using directional language such as go forwards, move backwards and turn left or right.

Finally, students will complete the unit by creating a model of their favourite landmark they have visited in Victoria (or Melbourne) either by drawing/designing it, using playdough or blocks. Students thoroughly enjoyed identifying and discussing famous landmarks/places they have visited in Victoria with their families and learnt about new and interesting places they may not have heard about before.
