Co-curricular - Junior Sport
As we approach the end of Term 1, it is important to see how much we accomplished in one short term. The term started with a new cohort of fresh-faced Year 5 students, keen to get their St Patrick’s journey underway. Very quickly they were thrown into summer sport trials alongside the Year 6 boys. In a very short period of time teams had been selected and we waited with bated breath for the season to commence. Unfortunately, mother nature decided to take centre-stage and the majority of the summer was washed out. Certainly, unprecedented times. I have never come across a summer that had more consistent rain than this term.
We were quickly into the first of our three major carnivals. Swimming at Wentworthville Swimming Centre provided an exciting venue for a very close Carnival. Congratulations to the winning house Hickey and all the age champions. Next it was the Cross Country carnival. With the weather in the week leading up to the carnival proving a challenge, it was touch and go whether we would actually get to run. Thankfully the clouds parted and we were able to go ahead with the carnival. In difficult conditions, it was the Berg House that came out on top overall. Congratulations to Berg and the age champions.
In the midst of all this we had boys selected to trial in various IPSHA and CIS trials. We had boys trialing in Swimming and Diving (IPSHA Carnival), Football, Basketball and Touch Football. Well done to all those boys selected in IPSHA and CIS teams and to those that may have missed out on selection, it is a feather in your cap to be selected to trial.
Lastly, we had our winter trials. With the weather and COVID-19 interruptions, Winter trials took on a life of their own. The boys displayed a high level of ability and focus during the trials. It will take the first three rounds to finalise the teams as many boys who were absent have been allocated teams for Round 1. I am aware that there are still a few boys yet to return to the College and missed trials. I will continue to work with these boys and families to get them involved in the Winter Sport Program.
A reminder that Winter sport training commences the first day back of Term 2. Please make sure that you have joined the SPC Team on Stack Team App, as I will post information in the documents section regarding training schedules. All teams will have two sessions during the week, with games commencing on Saturday 30 April (first Saturday in Term 2).
I would like to wish the two tour groups all the best with their upcoming tournaments and carnivals. Boys in Rugby will be traveling to Armidale this Friday to compete in the TAS Rugby Carnival and the footballers will travel to Brisbane for the EREA Football Tournament. Travel well boys and know that the whole College is behind you. We look forward to hearing of your results and know that you will represent the College with pride and passion.
I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe term break. May the Easter period bring you much joy and uninterrupted time with your family. Take care and I look forward to the start of the Winter season in Term 2.
