Take note

Reminder | Absence notification process

A gentle reminder regarding the process for reporting your child's absence from the College.

If your child is absent or will be late to school, parents and carers are required to notify the College as early as possible (by no later  than 8.30am).

The following are options that you can use:

Phone: Student Services Office (03) 6108 2560

SMS: 0437 996 701

Email: stmarys@smc.tas.edu.au

Website: Complete the 'Report an Absence' form online here.

Unexplained absences will be followed up. If a student becomes unwell during the day, parents or carers will be contacted and asked to take their child home.

COVID-19

If your child has been diagnosed with COVID-19 or has been a close contact of a person diagnosed with COVID-19 and is required to isolate, please refer to the reporting procedure outlined on our website here

Please note that the above process is required in addition to the normal system for notifying a student absence.

When notifying of a student absence via the St Mary’s College website or phone, please indicate COVID-19 as the reason.

New date | Year 7 and Year 10 vaccinations

As communicated in a recent email to parents and carers, the Year 7 and 10 immunisations will now be held on Wednesday 4 May 2022.

If your daughter has not completed and returned the signed form, can this be done as soon as possible. A form is required even if your daughter is not receiving the vaccination at St Mary's College.

If you have any questions, please contact Fiona Medwin on fmedwin@smc.tas.edu.au or (03) 6108 2560.

NAPLAN 2022

Each year, Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN—a national assessment program for literacy and numeracy.

When:

This year, the tests are scheduled from Tuesday 10 May to Thursday 19 May 2022.

Where:

Year 3 and 5 will complete testing between recess and lunch, and Year 7 and 9 will complete testing at the start of the day. Catch up sessions will be planned for afternoons and on Friday 20 May if needed.

This year NAPLAN is again being completed online, except for Year 3 Writing, which will still be a paper-based test. Students have participated in practice tests to familiarise them with the testing platform.

Benefits of NAPLAN

NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.

It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, but about assessing learning progress.

Teachers use the NAPLAN results to determine your child’s areas of strengths and where future focus is required and how best to provide support or extension activities.

How can I prepare my daughter for the testing?

The best way you can assist your child is by helping them to feel comfortable about the nature and purpose of the tests, and to assure them that the tests will give them an opportunity to show what they have learnt in class.

You can also:

  • avoid booking any appointments for your daughter on the testing days
  • make sure they get plenty of sleep leading up to and during the testing period
  • make sure they have a good breakfast on testing days
  • ensure they comes to school with a fully charged computer/iPad and headphones.

For more information about the national tests, please visit the NAPLAN website here.

Government collection of data

Every year, St Mary's College is required to provide the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment (the department) with certain information about our school, our staff and student body.

This information is collected by the department in accordance with the Australian Education Act 2013 (the Act) and the Australian Education Regulation 2013 (the Regulation).

It will be used to inform school funding calculations and helps ensure funding for non-government schools is based on need basis.

For more information, please view the 2022 Collection Notice for parents/guardians on our website here.
