Executive Director's Welcome

Year 7 students on the MCG

Happy 17th birthday Keisha!
Happy 17th birthday Keisha!

What a joy it has been to welcome our new MITS Year 7 cohort to Melbourne over the past few weeks!  While those first steps of Year 7 are always nerve wracking, this year the Year 7s join a large and welcoming cohort of MITS alumni, providing connection, community and belonging in Melbourne from the very start of the year.  Today, 80 Year 7 or alumni students are living in Melbourne at MITS or our Partner Schools pursuing their aspirations.

We are excited that more and more of our alumni continue to live with MITS once they’ve stepped out into our Partner Schools.  In just a few weeks, our third alumni boarding house – at 364 Church Street Richmond – will open to 20 more MITS students.  When it opens, MITS will be providing boarding to a total of 66 students from Year 7 to Year 12.

Also this month we start construction work on our fourth alumni boarding house, at 371 Church Street.  This is the final step in our plan to provide alumni boarding to all MITS students who choose it, and will allow us to provide a culturally celebratory living environment to another 40 MITS alum from early 2023.

A particular joy this term has been to see life returning to “normal” and our students enjoying the excitement and diversity of Melbourne once more.  In this first newsletter for 2022 you’ll see the enthusiasm with which our Year 7s and alum have grasped the opportunities of the new year.  We hope you enjoy learning what they’ve been up to.
