TAS

The TAS faculty at Evans High school is swinging back into action after going into hibernation for almost two years due to COVID-19 restrictions. During this period, the faculty has a got a new head teacher - Mr Amon, a new construction and IT Timber teacher - Mr Kumar and a new Manufacturing and Engineering (metals) teacher - Ms Wright. These teachers are all very experienced and are joining an already experienced and dedicated TAS staff at Evans High School. This union is very exciting because as it is happening whilst COVID-19 restrictions are easing.

Year 12 VET Hospitality and Food technology are smashing all records as students are going beyond their normal call of duty to prepare breakfast and lunch for school’s teaching and non-teaching staff. VET students are doing this as part of the competencies required for the course. Feedback from teachers indicates that students are doing very well in the cooking course because the foods they are serving are comparable to restaurant grade foods. You might never know; we may well be training potential future MKR winners right here at Evans High School! Yay!

Below are some pictures from our hospitality and food technology students in action.

New and interesting projects have already started with our year 12 Construction and Metal Engineering classes. It is exciting to see how motivated students are, when working on their projects with their teachers. Year 11 IT Timber also started on a high note. Students are fully engaged with their bed side table project and are loving it.

Stage 5 Design and Technology, Multimedia and IST classes will engage in cutting edge technology projects such as, Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality App Design projects. These projects will redefine what student engagement and motivation are about at Evans High School. Watch this space for updates.

MATHS

A very warm welcome to all students, parents and caregivers. It has been a great start with Year 7’s transitioning to secondary schooling. At Evans, we use a range of teaching resources to support students’ learning.

Our expectation is that every student comes well equipped to class with a scientific calculator, a 5mm grid exercise book (150-200 page) and the required stationery. Homework is set to support students review their skills, summarise their notes and develop strong and effective study skills.

All students doing Mathematics are required to have a scientific calculator. It is used extensively in classwork and in all examinations including NAPLAN and the Higher School Certificate. Students can purchase the Casio fx82AU Plus II at the front office for $20.

Students should be utilising Maths Online on a regular basis at home to consolidate their learning in class. Students will be given login details by their class teacher. Parents are able to receive an email detailing what their child has achieved each week. If parents would like their child’s log in details, please email individual Mathematics teachers. Students are especially encouraged to enhance the speed and accuracy of their mental arithmetic skills with Speed Skills.  https://www.mathsonline.com.au/games/speed_skills

Awards will be presented to students with the most improved scores and the highest achievers in each class.

Students can also use MangaHigh for that extra practice and homework. Teachers would be monitoring students’ activities and this way ensure they stay on task. MangaHigh is an ideal online tool with numerous math games, quizzes and tutorials. It teaches and reinforces a wide variety of math fundamentals, from counting and number sense all the way up to beginning algebra and geometry concepts.

In Mathematics, our main focus is the relentless endeavour to continuously enhance students’ learning and provide rich and engaging experience with their journey in Mathematics. We are implementing research based “Visible Learning in Mathematics and Talk Moves” strategies across all classes to support students. We also subscribe and use web-based applications such as Maths Online, Mathspace and Google Classroom to support students’ self-paced leaning needs.

To improve numeracy and NAPLAN results, we are in the process of implementing whole school initiatives focusing on numeracy within all subjects and in Maths we are using Numeracy Ninjas and past NAPLAN examinations to support our students to prepare for NALAN 2022.
