School Highlights

Easter Bonnet Parade

On Thursday 6 April, Fethers Years 10 to 12 had an Easter Bonnet Parade and had Year 1S judge who created the best Easter bonnet.

I don't think I've ever seen so many 'big kids' get competitive and into winning the votes of Year 1s!

Year 4 author visit from Sofie Laguna

Australian author Sofie Laguna recently visited Year 4M to share some insight into her novel, Meet Grace.

As part of the visit, the children got to hear about Sofie's early childhood inspirations and how her career has developed, as well as ask questions about our Term 1 class novel. The class learnt why certain characters were chosen, why events occurred and how the story was created.

Sofie loved responding to the thoughtful questions from the Year 4s and even reflected on her own practice as an author!

Sofie was so enthusiastic and inspiring. - Mia Nation

Thank you for visiting the Year 4s, Sofie!

Science activities in Term 1

Louise Macfarlane, Academic Dean of Science

SCIENCE CLUB

Science Club has been enthusiastically embraced by Years 5 and 6 this term! Earlier in the year, after learning about safety in the laboratory, students enjoyed methane bubbles (a handful of fire).

On their next occasion, they practised their engineering skills with a Spaghetti Tower competition!

More recently, the students completed a series of experiments with dry ice, as they were learning about sublimation and the properties of matter.

SCIENCE OPEN DAY AT THE CENTENARY FAIR

On 25 March,  we opened the doors of Laboratory 2 to our community for a day of colour, light and movement.

Parents and children alike got involved with experiments in light, renewable energy, Rube Goldberg, chromatography, making a lemon battery, floating paperclips, microscopy and psychology. Talented chemistry students performed flame testing and titration demonstrations.

In addition, out on the Green more science experiments were performed alongside giant bubbles, with bubble wands provided to spectators. Many future scientists found inspiration in these activities.

Lunchtime Chess Club

Tania Whitehead, Talent Development & Enrichment Coordinator

Chess is a popular lunchtime club in the Junior School. Learning to play chess and compete in competitions helps students to develop many beneficial skills, both within the mathematical classroom context as well as more broadly.

For example, while observing the group during their lunchtime sessions it was evident that students' were developing not only their core critical thinking and problem-solving skills, but also their self-efficacy, another vital life skill.

Congratulations to the Chess Club Champions for Term 1:

  • 1st Place – Lucas Xu (Year 3)
  • 2nd Place – Leo Mufic (Year 6)
  • 3rd Place – Jiaqi Xu (Year 4)

Quill Awards celebrate Victorian journalism

Lilla Lagiseti, Year 11

Attending the 28th Quill Awards on behalf of Kilvington was an amazing experience!

The Quill Awards celebrate excellence in Victorian journalism, from both individuals as well as pairs and groups who've worked collaboratively on projects over the year.

We had the wonderful opportunity of listening to the recipients speak about their award-winning work, receive writing tips and words of wisdom, and learn about some of the most recent news, issues and stories being reported in different areas of journalism.

Throughout the night, we also spotted some well-known faces within the crowd of accomplished journalists; even meeting and getting photos with a few of them!

I think my favourite aspect of the event was in seeing the diversity of the awards - in the winners, the attendees, the perspectives being reported, the content of the stories and even the categories in which the prestigious Quills were awarded.

I am so grateful I had the opportunity to attend this fascinating event.

Year 10 Media class - Game stories workshop at ACMI

Harry Shanks, Year 10

On 30 March, our Year 10 Media class went on an excursion to ACMI to attend the Game Stories workshop.

As part of the workshop, we used a program called Twine to make a choice-based storyline featuring common videogame tropes. Seeing so many examples of detailed and rich story games throughout the day, then actually making one ourselves, made for an extremely rewarding workshop.

Overall, the excursion was superb. It was a great reflection of the amazing experience the class of Media provides for me and my fellow classmates. This is something students can look forward to if they choose Year 10 Media as an elective.

Year 12 Easter Egg Drive

Jacqui Goldenberg, Community Service Program Director

In the spirit of compassion, and in alignment with our School motto of 'Not for our own, but others’ good', the Year 12 cohort recently held an Easter Egg Drive for the Lighthouse Foundation’s Easter celebration.

We were able to spread joy to our own community with a 'Year 12 Crazy Sock Day' and spread joy to the Lighthouse Foundation with a great collection of Easter eggs of all sizes and flavours.

Wow, your Year 12s did an amazing job at coordinating the Drive. Thank you so much for all your support and generosity. Our staff are very excited to provide these chocolates for our Easter event this weekend with all Lighthouse Foundation young people. - Tameka Williams, Community Fundraising & Events Coordinator
