Reading & Numeracy

Reading and Numeracy Learning in 2022

Throughout the year we have had the privilege to work with both teachers and students to help enhance the teaching and learning of reading and numeracy.

In reading, we have delved into the Science of Reading to improve the knowledge, skills and classroom expertise of ourselves and our teaching teams. We have explored the importance of teaching students to read through carefully sequenced lessons that build students confidence and mastery of decoding and blending taught sounds before moving onto more advanced sounds. We have integrated our reading, spelling and writing to ensure students are able to apply their reading knowledge when spelling and writing words and sentences.

We have explored fluency across all year levels to help students build their automaticity, phrasing and expression when reading a text. We have also helped students build strong paired reading routines across all grades. We have developed students vocabularies through exploring words more deeply. Unpacking a words spelling, meaningful word parts, multiple definitions and use across language devices such as idioms and puns. We also explored writing quality sentences and paragraphs with the Koalas, Meerkats and Chameleons.

In numeracy, we have had the opportunity to work closely with three mathematics experts including Anita Chin (Anita Chin Mathematics), and both Alex McDonald and Nicole Phillips from the Department of Education. We have explored mathematical concepts such as number and place value, additive strategies and multiplicative strategies. We have improved our practice to engage students in more hands on numeracy learning, rich mathematical tasks and challenging learning experiences.

Each classroom has been fully equipped with mathematical resources such as differentiated dice, dominoes, counters, unifix cubes, money and mathematical models such as number lines, 100  charts, ten frames, grids etc. We are very excited to continue to learn in 2023 and put more of what we have learned into practice.

We have loved learning alongside our teachers and students in 2022 and can't wait to continue our educational journey in 2023!
