In recent years, I have seen three of my children progress from school to either University or the workforce. I have been impressed by how each of them has actively sought out opportunities within their areas of interest and passion. I have seen first-hand how they have utilised dispositions such as perseverance, open-mindedness, resourcefulness and empathy to find new pathways or navigate unfamiliar situations.

This experience has reinforced for me how important it is that such qualities are cultivated among children and young people. One of the aspects of the International Baccalaureate program that makes it so valuable is the emphasis on developing the qualities and skills needed to be an effective learner.

Lessons are designed so that, while students are learning foundational skills in areas such as literacy and numeracy and about the world around them, they are also learning valuable lessons about themselves. As they are encouraged to ask questions, to investigate and take action, they come to understand more about their capacity to tackle complex situations and how they can make a positive difference within their school and community. These are the qualities that will help equip them for the future.

I look forward to the Grade 6 and Grade 10 exhibitions later this term. This will be an opportunity for students to showcase the finished products from their major project and to share some aspects of their personal journey. I hope it will be a time for students to reflect on important lessons that come from an experience that may have stretched or challenged them and how these may be used as they move onto their next adventure.
