Science Week

This year's Science Week theme: 'Glass - More Than Meets the Eye!' is an opportunity to celebrate the many roles that glass plays in our lives – from phone screens to optical fibre to glassware in labs – plus investigating glass as a part of our sustainable future.

To celebrate Science Week at St Mary's, we will have some scientists from the science Prime SCI! at Swinburne University visiting us over the next two weeks! These are workshops the students will be participating in:

Prep - Year 2: Mix and Unmix on Wednesday 17th August

Why do some things mix with water while others do not? How do we separate mixtures to get what we want? This delightful, hands-on session will draw children into the world of chemistry and engineering as they explore the phenomena of dissolving, crystallisation and make colourful discoveries with materials from around the house.

Year 3-5: Dry Ice Chemistry on Tuesday 23 August

Learn about carbon dioxide in its different forms and experience first-hand the energy of atoms and molecules as dry ice changes states. Fast-paced and activity-filled, students explore concepts of condensation and sublimation through exciting activities.

Year 6s: Electrical Circuits on Monday 15 August

This fun-filled session bridges simple circuits to the world of complex electronics and robotics. Students learn about electricity and electrical conductivity in the context of atomic structure, and assemble simple circuits with motors, LEDs and solar panels. At the end of the session, students apply newly acquired skills to construct machines that jiggle and dance!

In addition to this our amazing Year 6 STEM Leaders have organised some simple experiments that they will conduct with our Preps and Year 1s!

We look forward to a week of collaboration and exploration!
