Literacy and Numeracy News

At St Mary’s we use a whole school summative and formative assessment and curriculum tool called Essential Assessment. The summative assessment component allows teachers to pre-assess and post-assess their students either online or using the paper-based resources and enables them to monitor student growth with respect to the content descriptions and the achievement standards.

The formative assessment component aligns content based upon the students pre-assessment results, provides feedback to the teacher as they progress through each strand and substrand in terms with respect to the proficiencies of understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning, and provides additional learning opportunities based upon this feedback.

This assessment and curriculum resource can be utilised either online or as a paper-based resource and provides opportunities to differentiate and align content for individuals, groups and classes depending on the requirements of the students and teachers. Whole school analysis is also provided based upon the results to provide an overview of how each individual, class and cohort are progressing throughout each school year and over multiple years.

After Pre testing using Essential Assessment, students can hone their skills and address misunderstandings through My Numeracy and/or My Literacy and Sunset Maths.

Please feel free to email me if you would like to know more about Essential Assessment.

Many thanks
