Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

100 Days of Learning Celebration

It was certainly an exciting day on Thursday for our Prep students and their families as they celebrated their first 100 days of learning. Congratulations to all the students and our wonderful Prep Team who put together a very special day. The students enjoyed dressing up as if they are 100 years old, bringing in 100 things to explore in maths, for example: marbles, coco pops or Lego pieces and making a cake to celebrate.

Thank you to the parents and carers of our students who got into the spirit of our 100 Days of Learning, by dressing their children so wonderfully in their olden day clothes. It was quite funny watching 5 and 6 year-old children imitating their Grandparents and hobbling around the school. I loved hearing about lots of Nona and Nono stories during the day.

Enrolments for 2023

We are taking enrolments for 2023 and Enrolment forms can be requested by calling the Office or can be found on our website.   If you have a child turning 5 years old by April 30th, 2023, please contact us today to arrange a tour and/or enrolment.   Tours are held each Wednesday and Friday morning from 9.15am-10.00am. Alternatively, tours can also be arranged on other days.

It is vitally important that we know of any students who will be leaving our school this year, or at the end of the year. If your family are moving out of the area, or your child or children are changing schools, then please let us know immediately. Our 2023 planning has started already, and it helps us enormously if we have a clear indication of enrolments as early as possible.

Book Week Parade

Each year since 1945 the Children's book Council of Australia has brought children and books together across Australia. During this time schools and public libraries spend one glorious week celebrating books and Australian children’s authors and illustrators. To celebrate Book Week at MPS, we will be having a book week parade. This is a chance for your child to come to school dressed as a character from their favourite book. We cannot wait to see the imagination and creativity of our students. It is such an entertaining day! If your child has a younger sibling who does not yet attend our school, they too can dress up and join the parade! Of course, Parents and Carers are also welcomed to join in! The more, the merrier. We have a confirmed date for Monday 22nd August @ 9.15am.

Professional Practice Days

For term 2, the Department of Education and Training has provided schools with the option to hold each teacher’s allocated professional practice (PP) day on the same day for all staff. This is to enable the most effective and efficient use of this day. This term we confirmed the date with School Council and would like to communicate this with plenty of notice to parents. Tuesday, 30th August 2022 is the allocated day and students will therefore not be required to attend school on this day.  The reasoning for having our professional practice (PP) days on a Tuesday or Thursday, rather than on the back of a weekend, is because most of our staff work on these days.  From a finance perspective, it is cheaper for the school to have the majority of staff have their PP Day on the same day, rather than trying to fund it with teacher replacement costs (CRT).

COVID-19

This term has presented obvious challenges, particularly in terms of staffing pressures and families managing either COVID or the flu. The way in which all staff have stepped up to enable us to maintain on-site learning has been exemplary and appreciated by our community. We thank parents and carers for proactively managing illness and keeping us informed.

Moreland Primary School's STATEMENT OF COMMITMENT TO CHILD SAFETY

Moreland Primary School is a child safe organisation which welcomes all children, young people and their families. We are committed to providing environments where our students are safe and feel safe, where their participation is valued, their views respected, and their voices are heard about decisions that affect their lives. Our child safe policies, strategies and practices are inclusive of the needs of all children and students.

We have no tolerance for child abuse and take proactive steps to identify and manage any risks of harm to students in our school environments.

We promote positive relationships between students and adults and between students and their peers. These relationships are based on trust and respect.

We take proactive steps to identify and manage any risk of harm to students in our school environment. When child safety concerns are raised or identified, we treat these seriously and respond promptly and thoroughly.

Particular attention is given to the child safety needs of Aboriginal students, those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, international students, students with disabilities, those unable to live at home, children and young people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ+) and other students experiencing risk or vulnerability. Inappropriate or harmful behaviour targeting students based on these or other characteristics, such as racism or homophobia, are not tolerated at our school, and any instances identified will be addressed with appropriate consequences.

Child safety is a shared responsibility. Every person involved in our school has an important role in promoting child safety and wellbeing and promptly raising any issues or concerns about a child’s safety. Moreland Primary School has zero tolerance for child abuse.

We are committed to regularly reviewing our child safe practices, and seeking input from our students, families, staff, and volunteers to inform our ongoing strategies.

At Moreland Primary School, Together Working on Pathways to Success and our approach to creating and maintaining a child safe school environment is also guided by our school rights and school values. At Moreland Primary School everyone has the right to learn and feel safe. We understand that our attitudes and behaviours have an impact on the people around us.

Stay Safe,

Schools Tree Day

Schools Tree Day was Friday 29th July and MPS celebrated by wearing green accessories for a gold coin donation. The money raised was donated to the Friends of Merri Creek, a local community group who do some amazing work to protect and restore Merri Creek and its surrounding parklands for all of us to enjoy. Thank you to all students who participated.

In addition, we were lucky enough to receive native plant donations  from our local Bunnings and the wonderful Stephanie came and helped the students  plant them in our vertical garden. She patiently explained to them the benefits of native plants and how to continue to care for them.

International Friendship Day

Monday 1st August was International Friendship Day.

Students discussed what a good friend looks like through actions and words, as well as the impact that being a good friend has on ourselves and others. Here are some of our students’ captured thoughts:

Students also had the opportunity to think about these questions through some classroom activities. A particular favourite was friendship flowers, where the students had to think about what actions and words they see from a good friend.

Although these are simple discussions, it's great that our students can identify and articulate what they hope to see in themselves and each other. These are the kind of attributes we are proud to develop and promote at MPS every day.

Appeal for t-shirts

The 5/6 team are sending out a call to the MPS community.

We are seeking as many t-shirts as we can get our hands on as a part of our current project relating to global citizenship. Any size and colour is fine - indeed the wider range, the better!

There are only two requirements.

Firstly, that they are plain - that is no brands, writing, markings or images anywhere.

The second is that they are in decent condition - no stains or tears.

Please drop any t-shirts into the large wheelie bin outside of the office anytime in the next two weeks.

Many thanks…

Plastic / Reusable Bags

The foundation area is looking for donations of plastic/ reusable bags. Please drop to the foundation area if you have any.
