What did you do for work experience?

I completed my work experience at Langwarrin Sports Medicine Centre, there I got to work with the physios and observe them with their patients.

Why did you select this for work experience?

I chose to go to a physio because I wanted to gain a further insight into this career and what a typical week entails. This helped me grow my understanding of a physio’s job and helped me decide if it is a career I would like to pursue in the future.

 Highlights / what you learnt:

I found it so interesting seeing all the different types of patients that were treated. The patients’ conditions and injuries ranged from sporting injuries such as a knee issue, stroke patients trying to regain their mobility and elderly people trying to stay active and improve their strength. My main highlights were watching a couple of patients complete exercises in a hydrotherapy pool for recovery, joining in on a Pilates session and attempting to use some of the gym equipment. However, my favourite moment by far was seeing a patient get given a TENS machine. She was given this machine to reduce the pain of her condition known as ‘frozen shoulder’, where her arm was unable to move past her shoulder. It was intriguing learning how the machine worked and how it used electricity to stimulate nerves.

Overall, I truly enjoyed my week at Langwarrin Sports Medicine Centre and was extremely privileged to be there. I gain a range of knowledge and now I am considering working towards becoming a physio.

What did you do for work experience?

For my work experience placement, I went over to the Frankston City Council in the Governance department which covers keeping policy’s up to date and keeping things going smoothly around the council.

Why did you select this for work experience?

I decided to do my work experience placement at the council because I want to do something that involves laws and policies and the governance section of the council really fit in with what I think could be by career pathway.

Highlights / what you learnt:

During my time at work experience I got to do a lot of interesting and new things, such as meeting the Frankston Mayor and Paul Edbrook MP as well as having an opportunity to attended and contribute in a fake council meeting. Throughout the week I visited all the different departments listening and learning about all the unique roles and what they do that make up the council. Work experience gave me insight on what my options are and whether they are in line with what I what to achieve after high school.
