VCAL helps out in the FareShare Kitchen

On Tuesday 24th of May, Year 10 and 11 VCAL students went to Fareshare in Abbotsford to help put together food for people around Melbourne who suffer from insecurity. We made 980 sausage rolls and packed around 500 quiche meals. We all worked well in groups and tried different things like packing meals, cutting tomatoes, putting together sausage rolls and making sure the kitchen was clean and safe. We all hope we made a difference and that the food prepared will help those in need. We all enjoyed the day and we all hope to be there again soon! Leading up to this excursion, Jess Dolan and I also gathered non perishable food which we took along and donated on the day. Thanks to those who donated.

FOUNDATION\ INTERMEDIATE CAMP

VCAL PHILLIP ISLAND CAMP

On the 18th of April Year 10 and 11 VCAL students made their way to Cowes Caravan Park arriving at 11am to set up tents and settle in. We walked into town for a bite to eat before heading off to Amaze n' Things to complete a high ropes course.

For a few hours that afternoon we played on the beach and completed a mapping activity so we could work on our compass skills. We then went out in small groups to buy our own dinner and then met at a designated spot around 7:30pm so that we could all walk back to the campsite together. Then we had about an hour of free time before bed.

The next day, on the Tuesday, we were woken up around 7am to make our own breakfast and pack up all our things to then go to the Nobbies and do the board walk to spot penguins. We then caught the bus to Phillip Island Nature park at 10am to have a park ranger talk to us about the Aboriginal people who lived on Phillip Island, and to share a bit of knowledge about how they used the parks natural resources to survive.

Once the tour and talk was over, we hopped back onto the bus to go to San Remo for lunch and then proceeded to drive home. We arrived at school at 3:00pm and packed up the trailer and went home.

The students learnt about the local history of the Aboriginal people of Phillip island and the way they lived off the land. We have definitely come together as a whole class and is seems that everyone is closer.

Prices: Car wash $10.00 and Sausages $2.00

“This is a student lead program and we must each fundraise $7300, book our own itinerary, plan and budget, self cater and organise our own accommodation and transport. Whilst in Tanzania we will be climbing up Mt Meru, doing aid work in a disadvantaged community and many other both challenging and exciting things. As part of World Challenge we will further develop our leadership, communication and organisation skills while in an unfamiliar environment. Previous teams from MESC have built classrooms, vegetable gardens and volunteered in orphanages in other third or second world countries, such as Vietnam and Ecuador. We will be departing in June 2017 and are grateful for any support.”
