2017 College Commencement Mass

Below you will find my reflections presented to the Commencement Mass on Tuesday.

"Good Morning and a very warm welcome to each of you to the 2017 College Opening Mass. We welcome our celebrant Fr Paul Finucane and Deacon Kevin. We also welcome Br Sherrin and Mrs Therese Maclaine from the College Board. I love our opening Mass and it is a joy to see our new students in Year 5, 6 and 7 especially when many are gathered here on the altar. Welcome all.

We give special thanks for the 80 years of community service by St Pius X College and we gather to start the year exactly as the College has done here in this Church every year for 80 years.

What do we actually stand for? What do we believe in?

Ask yourself – Do I believe in Jesus? Do I believe in helping the poor? Do I believe that everyone is equal on earth and in heaven? Do I believe in justice, in peace, in accepting those who are different from me regardless of their race, gender, age and religion? Do I believe in forgiveness and compassion?  Then you believe in Gospel Spirituality. This is what the 2017 theme means. We must live it out.

Think about what you sing in Mass.  Our school song is exactly about Gospel Spirituality:

Whenever call of duty sounds,

whenever true hearts can make a stand,

There, indeed, we shall be found

St Pius' sons will lend a hand.

Our Opening Hymn that we love:

Ancient Words – ever true , changing me and changing you.

We have come with open hearts, oh let the Ancient words impart.

Today is an important day in the beginning of our 2017 school year as we ask God’s blessing on our 80th year. Let us put our faith into action!"
