Chess Club and Tech-free Tuesday’s

We have had large numbers of students attending Chess Club in the JRC on Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtimes.  In an effort to  cut down on ‘screen time’ we have also decided to go tech-free every Tuesday in the JRC.  Students will have the option to play chess or one of our collection of card and board games.  Laptops will only be allowed for homework purposes.

ePlatform Dyslexia settings

Is your student having problems with reading due to Dyslexia or other vision issues?  ePlatform our eBook library, allows students to customise their reading settings to make reading easier…

We have spent time researching how to better assist all readers ensuring ultimate comfort when reading eBooks on our ePlatform. In particular, we wanted to make it simple for those struggling readers, whether it be due to Dyslexia, Visual Impairment or any other condition that can create road blocks to reading traditional print books, be able to adjust settings to suit with an eBook.

After speaking to many experts in the educational field – from SENCO Teachers and Literacy Specialists to National Dyslexia Groups and Students in Schools – we have customised settings to assist each reader in a simple, easy to use pathway to find the perfect setting. The options now guide readers, popping up front and centre to ensure the eBook is able to be read immediately, with settings that are matched to the individual reader’s needs. These settings will remain with that user until they are changed.  It will follow them on every device the user logs in to.  Easy!

Study Tip No. 2

Staring at a computer screen or reading a textbook are very passive ways to learn, and while you will learn something from these actions, you might be surprised by how little information your brain will retain.

Try the following for more effective long-term memorization:

  • Read the textbook looking for answers to questions that you have in mind, and integrate the facts of the class into your understanding – take notes or dot points.
  • Look at the course objectives to determine what you need to know. Your class notes will suggest what is necessary to memorize for Outcomes.
  • Writing the information in question form really makes you think about what the teacher or textbook is telling you, and more than that you will have an excellent study resource to return to. Who knows, one of these questions you might even be on your exam!
