LEAD Students Attend Year 7 Camps

On Tuesday 23 February a group of the Year 9 LEAD students attended the Year 7 camp to guide the students through various games and activities. Although it was fun, we all were faced with challenges throughout the day and were required to exercise leadership skills in order to resolve them. We were all nervous at the beginning of the day, but with the support of each other and teachers, we progressively gained confidence and ended up having a great time with the Year 7 students.

We lead them through various games such as fruit salad, bang, capture the flag and a class favourite, number soccer. A big thank you to the teachers there that day, especially to Ms Libby Toovey, who gave great advice when we got confused and helped our leadership skills improve significantly.

During the Year 7 Camp we demonstrated great leadership skills such as being confident, leading by example but also being calm at the same time. We all hosted activities with all the Year 7 students and split into different groups. Lucinda and Lewis ran Dodge Ball and Scare Crow tiggy while Olivia and Nick ran dodgeball.  As the day went on, we all continued to develop more leadership skills. It was a wonderful experience and a great way to improve our leadership skills.

SLC Camp

Each year, the SLC comes together for what is an amazing experience to meet new people and make new friends. A three-day camp held at the wonderful Phillip Island adventure resort from 24 to 26 February in which the entire SLC collaborates and creates ideas for the year ahead as well as learn new and exciting things about leadership from our guest speakers.

We were very grateful to have two amazing guest speakers tell us about their experiences from all around the world. The first was Dr Fab D’Esposito, who talked about his amazing job in the non communicable diseases (such as diabetes) and eye care industry, specifically in low to mid income areas where he got to travel and implement strategic health programs to reduce the effects of eye disease caused by diabetes with the Fred Hollows foundation.

Our other guest speaker was David Toovey, a communications and partnerships consultant who is passionate about the environment and the positive connections between people everywhere in the world. He talked about his amazing experiences going to Rwanda and has conferred with the Rwandan President, Ministry of Environment and Rwandan Development board. He recently became an official Rwandan citizen for his services to the country.

Of course, SLC camp just wouldn’t be complete without the wonderful meals and incredible activities that every year make SLC camp so amazing. This year the Disney themed disco, our wonderful Skit night, Laser strike, crate climbing and so many other wonderful experiences helped everyone meet new people, create amazing friends, or create much stronger bonds to those who are already friends in an environment that is pure fun and leadership oriented.

The 2021 SLC Camp was honestly one of the best times I have ever had during my entire schooling and each year that I go on these camps I realize that the memories and friendships I create year after year on this camp will stick with me for the rest of my life. If you want to learn to become a leader or are passionate about leadership, I encourage you whole heartedly to join the SLC and become a better you.

A huge thank you to Mr Isaac Bakker, Ms Alarna Summers, Ms Georgie Long, Ms  Kate Burgess, Mr Mal Burt, Mr John Russell, Ms Kirsten Bakker, the amazing Ms Sarah Bahramis and the Year 12 students for organizing and attending this year’s camp.

From Wednesday 24 February to Friday 26 February, 72 students from Frankston High Schools SLC, went to Phillip Island to embark on an unforgettable experience. Over the three days, we all engaged in leadership sessions which included guest speakers, setting goals for 2021, mindfulness activities and team building exercises, along with the iconic laser strike and our themed disco. On the camp, students are put into colour groups, of which they spend quality time with for most of three days, led by our incredible Year 12 students. It was great to see everyone dressed up in their bright and colourful outfits, representing their team colour. It is so wonderful to see students from all different year levels bonding and creating long lasting friendships. We were very thankful to have had a visit from our new Principal, Mr Andrew Batchelor and the wonderful Ms Kylie Williams. We are so appreciative of the amazing SLC leader, Ms Sarah Bahramis, for organising such a wonderful camp each and every year. We are also very thankful for Ms Alarna Summers, Mr Isaac Bakker, Mr Mal Burt, Ms Jessica Bambridge, Ms Georgie Long, Ms Kate Burgess and Mr John Russell for coming along to the camp and showing their support to our ideas and goals for 2021. We can’t wait for next year!
