From the Principal

Principal Karl Russell

Welcome to Term 2

Term 1 went by so quickly, the end of term break was certainly well deserved by one and all. I hope that all of our students and staff are refreshed and ready for the term ahead. The Cheltonian Calendar is looking quite full already but I’m sure Term 2 will be a productive one.

School Review

In the final weeks of Term 2, our four yearly school review was led by Bob Stephen representative of the Department of Education & Training. The report will now be released to the school council and our new strategic plan implemented.

The Review Panel included Student Leaders Sarah Hermann, Sami Pauliuk and Ben White, Leanne Marshal (Senior Educational Improvement Leader – DET) Pitsa Binnion (McKinnon Secondary College), Steve Cook (Albert Park College), and Andrew Hall (School Council President). Along with the principal class team Brooke Matthews and Helen Page, Leading Teachers Jodie Costanzo, Emily Nicholls and Brett Younger.

The review was very detailed, with the panel speaking with staff, students and parents along with two full days of classroom visits. The review is an important reminder of the work we do as educators and a reminder that our students and staff are wonderful.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Thank you to the parents who reached out to share their thoughts regarding Parent teacher interviews, the feedback was appreciated. Appointment links with students and parents offered flexibility to all concerned parties and gave us something to think about moving forward.

Top Design

We are again represented in the Top Design awards, as mentioned in the last Cheltonian Yoseph’s design is now on exhibition at the Melbourne Museum. Top Designs 2021 brings together exceptional works from some of Victoria’s most talented VCE students from 2020. Yoseph and his family and staff member Mr. Au were invited to an exclusive launch of the exhibition at the museum.

This is the second year in a row for a Cheltenham student's successful submission into the Top Design Awards. The works of our 2020 successful entrant is proudly displayed in the schools entrance.

Gavin Ferrier

I would like to congratulate Gavin Ferrier on his appointment to an Acting Assistant Principal role at Noble Park Secondary College for the remainder of the school year.

We congratulate Gavin on his appointment and assure him of our support as he takes up the challenges that are ahead.

I would like to thank Gavin for his professionalism and commitment to the college and we wish him all the best in his new role as Acting Assistant Principal at Noble Park Secondary College.

ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day is an opportunity to reflect and honour those individuals that have fought in conflicts and remember those who have not returned home to their families. This year the college held an ANZAC Day Assembly which was led by our College Captains Sarah, Ben, Nikki, and Branson and supported by Ms Jess Kennedy.

I would like to thank our guest parent Mr John Throssell who shared stories, with the students, of family members who have served. I was particularly impressed with how Jessie Inglis (Year 8) spoke about her Great Grandfather and his story.

Year 8 Camp

I ventured down the cost on Tuesday to attend the Year 8 Camp at Foster. It was a great opportunity to see all the students engaged in activities designed to build strong friendships with each other. They took part in team building activities, challenges and whole group activities throughout the three days.

On behalf of the students I would like to thank each of our wonderful staff for giving up their time to attend the camp. Congratulations and thank you to coordinators, Ms Marie Tsimilas and Mrs Amy Crilley and the Director of Junior School, Mr Gavin Ferrier for the overall management and running of a successful camp.

NAPLAN

Commencing Monday the 10th May, students in years 7 & 9 will complete a number of assessments as part of the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).

NAPLAN testing is only one aspect of our school’s assessment and reporting process, this does not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. Your child’s teacher will have the best insight into your child’s educational progress.

For more information about NAPLAN please visit the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (acara)

Open Day

I thoroughly enjoyed meeting families, who visited as part of our open day tours last Wednesday. Thank you for the feedback, we too are very proud of all of our Captains, SRC members and school leaders who conducted the school tours and themselves in an extraordinary manner.

School Tours

Grade 6 families will have been provided with enrolment forms from their primary schools and should be returned to the primary school by May 14.

School tours will continue through out the term, for students and parents in grade 5 and are available to book through Compass Tix
