School Council News

Some Good News

We are very fortunate that Rachel Corben has decided she wants to stick with our school for another contract. Rachel has been an incredibly dedicated and enthusiastic Principal and has overseen some terrific initiatives, including a biennial school production (you’ll be blown away if you haven’t seen one yet), the new kitchen/art space, the Indigenous Garden Learning Walk, therapy dogs and the soon to be completed outdoor classroom. Under Rachel’s leadership (together with and our stellar teaching and admin teams) the school has been acknowledged for our exceptional performance in several curriculum areas and is sought out for our excellence in implementing the respectful relationships program. Most importantly, Rachel is a kind and thoughtful person who is nurturing towards staff and students and really cares about our school. Please join me in congratulating Rachel and thanking her for continuing to support us!

Committees and Groups

Friends of The Arts

Last Friday we held our first meeting for The Friends of the Arts. Our School Production Student Action Leadership Team (SALT) met with parents to discuss support for the production. The meeting then continued to discuss other ways we can further promote and celebrate The Arts across the school including a Writers Festival with author talks.

Buildings, Grounds and Sustainability

On Monday the Buildings, Grounds and Sustainability committee met briefly to discuss plans for the twilight Working Bee on Wednesday 28 April and the Working Bee on Sunday 2 May. We have also been working closely with the Landscapers with the completion of the outdoor learning space. The landscapers removed the temporary fencing earlier in the week to discover that the mounds with granulated sand would not withstand the heavy traffic play of our students. The fence has been re-erected as we find a solution for this issue. We hope to see this space ready for use early next term.

Greener Government School Buildings Program

Carlton North Primary School is participating in the Greener School Buildings program. Solar panels will be installed on the roof of the Foundation classrooms early next term.

Although the Department of Education has arranged the installation of the solar system for the school, the majority of this project is being funded through our school budget over the next five years. CNPS is committed to embedding sustainability into the operations of our school.

Fundraising and Community Engagement

The Fundraising and Community Engagement committee met last Friday. The committee has determined that it will be too much of a strain on the generosity of our school community to hold a Fete in Term 2 and then go back to our March Fete in 2022. We also acknowledge the significant role the Fete plays in bringing our school community together at the start of each year. With the easing of COVIDSafe restrictions, we are hoping to conduct a whole school picnic on the day of the official opening of the outdoor learning space. We feel that our school community is in desperate need of a celebration and a reason to come together. We look forward to communicating the date of the official opening of the outdoor learning space once we have confirmed the availability of the Wurundjeri Tribe Council for a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony.

Applications for Grants and Initiatives

CNPS School Council and School Leadership actively seek out grants and initiatives to support the teaching and learning and school environment at our school. This year we have applied for a number of grants including the Creative Workers in Schools program and the Music in Schools - Teacher Professional Learning Program 2021.

Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful in our application for the Creative Workers in Schools Program, however, we were successful in being accepted into the Music in Schools program. This program provides professional learning and mentoring for Chris and Carla and up to $5,000 in funds for instruments and other resources for the Performing Arts Room.

Committees

School Council would like to continue to extend the invitation for any parents/carers or extended family members that would like to join any of our committees or working groups within the school. If you are keen to contribute to the school community and have an area of expertise or passion for any of the key groups below, please contact Rachel rachel.corben@education.vic.gov.au
