Principals Report
Welcoming our parent/carers and community back into the school is the highlight of Term 2, 2021 for us here at the school. Guyra Central School staff, in conjunction with our many community partners, is working tirelessly to provide learning opportunities for all of our students and increased support for our families.
During Term 2 it is our intention to invite our learning partners to a thank you morning tea. Our Partnerships for Learning event was very well attended during 2019. During the morning tea we will also be looking to discuss new partnerships and the extension of our existing agreements. Please contact me at the school if you wish to receive an invitation.
It was a privilege to take part in the Colour Explosion Fun Run 2021 at Guyra Central School. I ran with our newest students, our Kindergarten cohort. They were very kind and at one point I was extended a helping hand! It was great fun and a beautiful day for a great cause. Thanks to our parents who took the time to come into the school and share the fun with us.
Once again our little school is punching well above its weight in our sporting accomplishments. Please take the time to read the Sport Reports in this addition and acknowledge the wonderful commitment of our students. Since Term 2 has commenced there has rarely been a day when we did not have students travelling to other schools and areas or we have hosted students at our school. The success of these events is a tribute to the work that is under-taken by staff and parents. These partnerships form the spirit of the school.
I felt very proud at the Parents and Citizens meeting on Tuesday 4th May when our parents were talking about our Primary students and the great citizenship demonstrated while competing and supporting their student colleagues at the Primary Cross Country meet. Winning is great but it is the qualities that were described to me at the P&C meeting that made me feel most proud. In saying this six of our students were selected to move through to the next round and will represent the school at Coolah.
Year 12 now have their Term 1, 2021 reports. Mrs Helen Doyle, Careers Advisor and myself will be meeting with all Year 12 students and their parents during Week 5, Term 2. These meetings provide opportunities to discuss future plans and ensure that everyone is working together, and in the same direction, to provide the best opportunities for our Year 12 students. At the time of our meeting/discussions Year 12 will have 15 weeks remaining of their school life.
Viv White, CEO of Big Picture Australia, will be in the school Wednesday 12th May and Thursday 13th May 2021. Viv is meeting with educational executive at the University of New England on Tuesday 11th May 2021. Travelling with Ms. White is a Year 12 student from Morisset High School, Savannah White (no relative of Viv White or Jim White, who is also a member of the Guyra Central School Big Picture Education team) Savannah is a Year 12 Big Picture Education students who wishes to enter courses at the University of New England 2022. Savannah’s pathway to University is by presentation of her portfolios. Savannah’s transition to UNE 2022 will commence next week and during her stay she will speak with staff and students at Guyra Central School. Can I ask any parents who wish to meet with Viv White or Savannah next week that you contact the school before afternoon, Monday 10th May, 2021, so that we can book you in.
Further discussions at our P&C meeting came from three of our parents whose children are enrolled into Big Picture Education Advisory classes at our school. It was great to get positive feedback about the program from our parents. The Exhibition process that was completed at the end of Term 1 was a great opportunity for parents/carers, students and staff to come together to discuss learning. The Big Picture Advisory teaching staff are currently working with students, parents/carers and community partner to complete 2021 Learning Plans. Please contact me or come in for a cuppa if you have any questions around Big Picture Education.
Thanks to all of our community for their great support. I look forward to meeting and engaging with you during the rest of the term. Please don’t hesitate to call me if you have any questions.
Thanks
Michelle Nicholson
