Claims for Property Damage and Medical Expenses Policy

The following are reminders about the liability for damage or loss of personal property brought to school along with responsibilities for medical expenses. We ask that families familiarise themselves with these policies and take the necessary precautions.

  • Students and parents/carers are responsible for a student’s personal item/property, including if it is lost, stolen or damaged at school. Neither the Department nor the school is responsible if any student’s personal items are lost, damaged or stolen
  • Claims for the reimbursement of the cost of a personal item/property brought to school will not be paid by the school and are not covered by school insurance
  • Any personal item/property that is brought to school by a student is the responsibility of the student and is not the responsibility of the school, and is not covered by school insurance
  • In cases of willful damage caused by a student which destroys or significantly damages school property, principals may choose to report the matter to the police
  • Parents/carers are responsible for all medical expenses, including ambulance costs, if they are incurred by a student at school
  • It is not a requirement that the principal contact them if, in the principal’s opinion, an ambulance is required without delay. This may include an air ambulance should that be considered necessary. Principals will use their judgement as to what action to take in cases of student accidents or sudden illnesses and, depending on the case, may not contact the parent prior to that action being taken.
  • Parents/carers are encouraged  to have up-to-date ambulance cover for their child
  • Parents/carers can purchase insurance policies from commercial insurers independent of the school
  • The SMPS Policy regarding  personal property can be found in the link below

Mobile Device Policy

The Department of Education have very strict guidelines around the use of mobile devices (mobile phones, iPads, smart watches) used during school time.

Find the policy in the link below so you know the rules.

Device Use in Class Policy - Acceptable User Agreement and eSafety

First off - please do not allow your primary school aged child onto any social media platforms - full stop. And please, don't allow them to play violent or age-inappropriate video games.

Next, please check our guidelines below for the safe use of devices in class. Staff will be reiterating these points to your children - but if you chat with them too, that would be very supportive. Sanctions apply when these rules are broken.

Students must always:

  • Bring their device to school charged and ready to use
  • Use their device as directed by a teacher
  • Protect personal information on their device and when working online. Including names, passwords, photos and other identifying information.
  • Respect themselves and others when sharing online
  • Respect their device by always putting it away in a safe place after use
  • Follow parent and guardian rules when using their device at home
  • Speak to a trusted adult if they see something that they do not like or makes them upset

Students must not:

  • Use their device in a way that distracts other students or teachers.
  • Deliberately search for rude or violent content online
  • Use apps or games that are inappropriate for children of primary school age
  • Distribute photos or video of another person without their permission
  • Play games at school on their device (including before and after school and at recesses or during ‘free’ class time)
