Specialists & Tutors

Meet the specialist team (P.E. Music, Art and Mandarin)...

PE - Mr Callum Freel (Team Leader)

Hi Super SMPS families,

My name is Mr Callum and I have been at SMPS since its foundation year in 2018. I started off as an integration aide whilst my teaching qualifications were being transferred over from the UK.

In 2019 I had an awesome Grade 4/5/6 composite class which we managed to split half way through the year (I took Grade 5). Then in 2020, I shared the same awesome class when they entered Grade 6 and started teaching PE as well.

In 2021, I no longer had my own class but was privileged to teach every student in the school PE! I used to teach Maths in High School back home but I have enjoyed the switch.

I can’t want to continue sharing my passion for sport and exercise with all our incredible community.

Visual Art - Miss Phoebe Katos

Hello South Melbourne Primary School community!

I could not be more excited to join your fantastic school this year as the Visual Arts teacher. I grew up in Geelong but have always wanted to move up to the big city and have been living in South Yarra for the last 12 months and teaching at Parktone Primary School. I love to cook, travel and paint. Painting is my favourite style of visual art because even when it doesn’t turn out how you thought, it can end up even better!

I am lucky to have always known I’ve wanted to be a teacher and always had a passion for art. I can’t wait to help inspire the students of SMPS to be creative, imaginative and innovative, and we will all learn and grow together.

Mandarin - Miss Lucy Lu

Hi South Melbourne families and friends, I’m Miss Lucy.

This will be my fourth year at South Melbourne Primary School. I’m a passionate Mandarin teacher, bringing the Chinese culture to both first language learners as well as students who may speak Chinese at home. I believe in engaging students in a dynamic classroom environment, teaching Mandarin by promoting and encouraging our students to be confident and active learners.

Outside of school time, I enjoy learning about different cultures. I also love eating delicious food from different countries.

I am very excited to teach at South Melbourne Primary School and meet all the families and community members in 2022.

Music - Mr Paul Creasey

Hi awesome SMPS families, I am Mr. Paul.

I am the South Melbourne Primary School Music Teacher. This will be my fifth year at SMPS. I started teaching at our school when it first opened at the beginning of 2018. It has been amazing to see our school grow so quickly into the great place that it is. I have a lot of gratitude for the opportunity to work at SMPS.

We have a very special team of staff and a magnificent group of students. I can’t wait to see what we will achieve in year 5 at South Melbourne Primary School.

Miss Sophie Coote - Tutor/Coach

My name is Miss Sophie. I am originally from a small town in England called Brentwood. I taught there for a few years before moving to Melbourne in 2016. This is my fourth year at South Melbourne Primary School.

I now live in Melbourne with my partner Sam and our dog Maverick. We are soon to be a family of four with a new arrival coming in May 2022!

I love exercise. In my spare time, I like to go running or go on long walks with friends. Like most teachers, I also love coffee!

I am excited to work with students from across the school in my new role this term.
