Prefect Perspectives

Welcome back to the 2022 school year!

My name is James Watson and it is my absolute honour and privilege to represent Trinity College as the Head Prefect this year. Throughout 2022 the Year 12 Prefects will be collating an article weekly based off day-to-day events, titled the 'Prefects' Corner', and will be placed in the College newsletter. If you're a student or parent at TC past or present you'd know it's no secret that TC is a busy place! Along with the timetabled classes, events, masses and fixtures you're required to partake in as part of your Trinity College education, there is an immense amount of unique opportunities where students challenge themselves or encounter new things that aren't always brought to light. Also, as a school we are constantly changing and looking for ways to improve, to give our students and staff alike the best experience at TC possible. So, as a Prefect group we have decided to utilise the newsletter to communicate the extraordinary everyday feats and experiences of our students, as well as any recent changes around the College, to those interested.

As per usual, the first week back at school for 2022 brought mixed feelings for everyone. This year we welcomed around 30 new teachers and 200 senior students to the College! With the excitement of new beginnings, new classes and classmates mixed in with the abstract new timetabling system, something even I am yet to wrap my head around, it was an unusual first week for our students. However, having passionate Senior Mentors, Heads of Year or PCG teachers on-hand gave students the support network to be able to adapt quickly and get much-needed help if required, and I have no doubt we, as a College, will adapt quickly to this change.

On Tuesday, the Year 12's welcomed members of the 'Golden Heritage Club' back to the College. Such members had graduated Trinity College or CBC Perth on the Terrace some 50 years ago, and were welcomed back for our opening year group mass led by Fr Oscar Aguilera. It was wonderful to see the pride the members still felt for the College despite some having left CBC Perth around 70 years ago, and the mateship and camaraderie many still shared. A group of year 12 students joined the Golden Heritage Club for morning tea after mass had concluded, sharing with the past students a chat over tea and coffee.

Training commenced for most sports this week, with senior school boys on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, and middle school boys on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, with the exception of year 7's, who train during school time, and rowers, who train at different times. I would like to wish all students the best of luck in their round 1 efforts against Wesley, especially to the rowers who will host the Trinity regatta at Champion Lakes in preparation to defend the Hamer Cup once again this year. We extend the fondest of welcomes to our new Head of Sport, Mr Ryan Lockyer, who will be taking the reins from Mr Silver when it comes to sport at Trinity this year.

After witnessing the construction of our College fitness centre early last year, the gym is now in full swing! Decorated on the outside with photos of past and present Trinity athletes and the inside with inspiring phrases, the facility is bustling morning and afternoon with keen competitors avid to build on their strength and put TC on top this year. Combined with the passion and expertise of Perform Strength and Conditioning coaches, there is no doubt we will see an improvement in both the culture and results from our sporting community this year.

On Thursday, however, a major spanner was thrown in the works for education in Western Australia. WA health reported a student tested positive to COVID at Corpus Christi College in Bateman - the third school in 2 days impacted by the virus. Henceforth, how Trinity will cope as a school in 2022 remains unknown. But whatever happens, I have no doubt the TC students, teachers and leadership will react by doing whatever means necessary to ensure all students still have opportunities to thrive, approaching all things In Nomine Domini.

On behalf of all the Prefects I wish everyone a seamless start to the year, and good luck to all boys in their first fixture!

James Watson
