In Everything Give Thanks

“Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.” Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Why is it so hard to ask for help? Why is it so easy to say thank you when someone does help, even when we haven't asked for it? It's a bit of a paradox.

We are very good at projecting strength even when we are struggling a little and too often we only show vulnerability when we are at breaking point. Our relationship with God can be like this too. Prayer is so much easier when we need something or when we are willing to try everything to dig ourselves out of a hole. As the old saying goes, there's no such thing as an atheist on the battlefield.

But what is our relationship with God and prayer like when we do feel strong? When we're not in danger of falling?

Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

We need to be more mindful of praying with thanksgiving, not just when we need to pray. Regardless of what’s happening in our lives, we should thank God for the good we are surrounded by. Prayers of gratitude, no matter how short, can form a quick and positive part of a morning routine. In turn, these moments of gratitude can contribute to our wellbeing and mindest.

God wants to enter into a relationship with us and prayer is an important part of how this relationship works. Like all healthy relationships, it cannot be based on one person always asking for help or complaining about their problems. Saying thankyou every now won't do us any harm at all. In fact, it will do us good.
