Year 12 Camp

Please enjoy some reflections written by some of our Year 12 students that attended the Lord Somers camp in Week 1.

Camp was truly a one in a lifetime experience that I will keep with me my entire life.

At school, most of us like to split ourselves into segregated groups and we don’t tend to interact with other friendships, so hearing that you’ll be put into groups with kids you may have never spoken to sounds scary. We weren’t fond of the idea either, however, I believe this camp helped us connect, communicate, and learn to create new friendships we might not have thought would work before.

Not only did it strengthen our relationships with our peers but also our teachers. I overheard many people talking about how camp gave them another perspective on our teachers. They stopped seeing them as ‘teachers’ and more as ‘human beings.’ It was enjoyable to talk to them about life and other things on a more casual level.

The activities we did were some of the coolest things I’ve done in my life. So much that I’m thinking of buying myself a paddle board!

The camp counsellors’ energy was incredibly positive! They made an effort to get to know us all and I know I can speak on behalf of us all when I say we will miss them dearly. They made the teamwork games so much fun which made everyone want to contribute and join in too.

Everything felt so normal and relaxing I’m so glad we got to experience Lord Somers as our last hurrah of Year 12. I’ve made new friendships that I’m forever grateful for making and those people helped make falling out of kayaks and off paddle boards more fun!!

Lord Somers Camp was such an amazing experience, not only did it bring the cohort of year 12’s and teachers closer but we all had such a good time. My favourite activity was definitely stand up paddle boarding with all my friends and watching the teachers fall off, however, the raft building competition came in a very close second. Lord Somers was definitely my favourite camp I have been on and would definitely recommend.

My experience at camp was one that will always be remembered. From the wide range of activities that you do surrounded in nature, from paddle boarding to pizza making, to art walks in which you learn about the land, you come out of the 3 days with stronger connections, new knowledge, and a motivation to see your final year through.

My personal favourite activity was paddle boarding and the activities that followed, for example when we put our boards together and raced across them diving into the ocean to unveil the winner.

Or when we kayaked through the river under the warm sun. It was such a positive, refreshing experience surrounded by people that want the best for you, to be honest we all wish it was longer and I bet you will too. If you don’t go that’s completely up to you but I strongly would recommend it to anyone as I believe it’s something everyone should be able to experience at least one.
