Year 7 - 9 Sports Academy Camp - Bright

STRIVE: Our Year 7-9 Sports Academy students recently returned from their end of year camp to Bright and whilst a few activities needed to be restructured due to the weather, nothing dampened the students spirits. This was the first time the Sports Academy was able to conduct an annual camp since 2019, so everyone was ready to embrace the opportunity and have some fun!

Campers stayed at Alpine Fitness and Sports Camps in Bright and participated in a range of strength and conditioning sessions such as boxing, strength, running technique and hill sprints. They also participated in educational workshops where they planned out their goals for 2023 and took part in a range of outdoor activities such as cycling and hiking. And of course - the Soccer Academy students were particularly interested in keeping up to the date with the World Cup and we may have watched a match or two!

The camp was a chance to visit and stay at a high performance sports environment, travel away in a group (just like on a sports tour) and a reward for a year of early mornings and committed training. Congratulations to the students who attended on a great year and positive contribution to camp - we are currently planning for 2023.

Year 7 - 9 It's DLT Time!

STRIVE:  At SCSC in years 7-9 students engage in a Deep Learning Task (DLT) twice a year. Learning at SCSC is designed using the SOLO taxonomy that guides students towards higher order thinking, also known as extended abstract where students create, evaluate and more. The DLT combines these skills with real world capabilities such as critical and creative thinking and social and personal development to work on collaborative projects that build on the skills and knowledge students have covered over the semester. Having students apply what they have learnt during the semester to a new topic they are interested in cements these skills.

In year 8’s DLT students have chosen a ‘passion’ or ‘interest’ area to apply a range of literacy, numeracy, scientific, historical and creative skills to. Students choose what inspires and interests them and work towards a showcase to present and celebrate their learning with their community. Some of the passion areas chosen by our amazing students this year are Anne Frank, Seven Wonders of the World, Pablo Picasso, Minecraft, Breakfast and AFL. Ms. Wood is modelling the process with her own passion area Harry Potter!

Last week the Deep Learning Task continued for year 7,8 and 9. Our 7 students continued on with their collaborative projects. They have been participating in a challenge to colonise a particular planet while thinking about what is needed to sustain life. They had to use scientific knowledge to perfect the landing site as well as mathematics of atmosphere needed to sustain life. They have also had to deepen their political understand to choose and create a government (yes there are some intergalactic dictatorships running!) Photos here show students are building on their spatial awareness to build a free standing monument or shelter that meet the needs of their colony.

Year 9 Story Time

The year 9 students had their final story time community session this week for the year, incorporating a festive theme. Students made Santa keys, reindeer food and Santa cookies.  The pre-schooler and their parents were exceptionally thankful to our students and Katrina Simpson for running the sessions.

Year 9 Careers Expo & Wellbeing Day

FLOURISH: On the 24th November our Year 9 students participated in their final wellbeing day for the year.

Firstly, students opened letters they had written themselves last wellbeing day and reflected on how much they have grown. They then wrote letters to open when they finish Year 12, to go alongside the one they wrote in Year 7!

Next we had our Careers Expo, where we had 15 fabulous volunteer guests from our wonderful community who came in to chat to our students about a range of different careers and to speak about about their job and pathway.

We wish to send out a big thank you to our amazing presenters for offering take the time to come and share their wisdom with our eager Year 9s!

Year 10 Outdoor & Environmental Studies

STRIVE: Students in Year 10 Outdoor and Environmental Studies participated in a mountain biking excursion on November 18. The class has been exploring local natural environments, learning about their history, current uses and environmental issues.

RESPECT:  We are giving a shout-out to a couple of our awesome Year 9 students , one of which is Hanna C. who has has donated her hair to Wigs For Kids.  As the name suggests, Hanna's long locks will be turned into a wig for kids that need one.

Hanna is raising some money towards the cause so if you'd like to donate, here is the link:

RESPECT: We also have Evie D who along with her older sister Ella D will also be cutting their hair to help children who have battled cancer across Australia.  Evie has been growing her hair for the past 3 years to support the cancer charity Challenge, which raises money for kids and their families having to deal with this disease.  Evie's hair will be donated as part of the fundraiser, to be made into a wig and Ella will go a step further by shaving her head!

Great Vic Bike Ride

UNITE: SCSC Students have been representing the College by participating in the annual Great Victorian Bike Ride. On Day 3 of the Great Vic Bike Ride,  they had reported that they had ridden 130kms over 2 days.  They had rain and tailwinds most of the way and some well deserved downhills.

After a well deserved rest day in Apollo Bay on Thursday, they rode to Anglesea along the Great Ocean Road.  They looked forward to riding on a fully closed road so they could admire the views!  They finally got some fantastic weather to accompany their ride.

What an impressive effort and we are very proud of your efforts!  We look forward to hearing about the rest of your exciting journey upon your return home.
