Grade F/1

This term students began by creating scratch foam prints based on their favourite animal. Students extended their knowledge of printmaking by learning how to use paint when making a print. They learnt how to use a brayer (roller) to create a print, students were taught the importance of using the right amount of paint on the scratch foam and how to carefully lay a piece of paper when making a print.

Currently, students are learning all about textiles. To begin with, students have been exposed to weaving by learning about the different parts of a loom, which include a loom, the weft and a weave. As part of this unit, students created paper weaves. For these weaves, students were given the opportunity to revise their knowledge of lines, using poscas to decorate their strips of paper, and practiced their cutting skills when creating their loom frames. During the process of weaving, students were encouraged to verbalise the actions needed to create the weave: 'under...over...under...over'. As the term progresses, students will be using textiles to make a picture inspired by the images found in the popular series 'Charlie and Lola'.

Grade 2/3

In Art, the Grade 2/3's have been learning about sustainability. So far this term, students have recycled various pieces of cardboard to create unique works of art. The two elements of art that students focused on for this unit were contrast and texture to add interest to their artwork. Students had free choice of their chosen subject matter and were guided to create plans of their collage. To help resolve any design issues, students were reminded to break down their plans into shapes. During reflection time, many students explained that they enjoyed the challenge of this unit and found it empowering to be able to make wonderful examples of art, using materials that would have otherwise ended up either in landfill or the recycling bin.

To further build on students' knowledge of developing sustainable art practices, students will be creating 3D papier mache sculptures using recycled paper and making glue that contains no microplastics.

Grade 4-6

At the beginning of this term, the Grade 4-6's have been looking at various icon paintings to help create parody paintings. They were exposed to a variety of different examples of paintings that had been parodied, as well as looking at music videos and songs. Students quickly discovered that parodies were a 'copy' of a piece of artwork, which included changing a few items or characters to add a comedic element to the piece. They learned the importance of leaving a few major 'clues' to the original painting to assist viewers to make links to the original artwork.

Currently, the Grade 4 and 5's are working on their jean pocket creatures, as they also learn how to upcycle old pairs of jeans to create felt mini cushions for their creatures. Later on, students will be using a simple stitch to complete their jean pocket, once it has been filled with hobby-fill.

The Grade 6's are busily working on their graduation bears. They have been learning the basics of sewing; from using a pattern; how to pin fabric together; how to thread a needle; tie a knot; and finally, how to make a simple running stitch of a uniform size. Students have been intrigued to learn what a seam allowance is and why remembering to leave enough fabric is important when filling their completed bear with hobby fill. In the next few weeks, the students will be encouraged to use their creative flair to bring life to their creations.

Trash to Treasure T-Shirts

I would like to thank all the families that purchased the 'From Trash to Treasure' T-shirts as part of the School Production Fundraiser. It has been wonderful seeing all the students wear their house colours during their specialist day.

Please note that the final orders have been distributed to students during their specialist day this week.

I would also like to thank Clare Rae, for all her hard work to ensure that this initiative was a success.

Congratulations to Adelyn and Stella for their artistic contributions to the final t-shirt design.

Overall the school community has raised a total of $568.80 which will fund part of this year's school production.

Thanks Again,

Margaret
