Wellbeing

How does sleep impact wellbeing?

Sleep is vital to a child’s wellbeing. When children sleep well, they are more settled, happier and ready for school the next day. They are able to think clearly, concentrate for extended periods of time, and learn new information well. Sleep also strengthens their immune systems, supports overall development and their ability to function properly on a daily basis.

When we are tired and sleepy we all know the impacts that it can have on our ability to function normally. Trying to catch up on sleep on weekends is not the answer and can still lead to severe sleep deprivation.

Recent studies have shown than many children, especially teenagers, are missing out on vital REM (deep) sleep, which is particularly important for memory and learning. The results from our most recent PIVOT wellbeing surveys suggest the almost half of the middle school students are not getting the 8-10 hours of sleep that are needed to build memory and allow a growing body to function at it’s optimum.

Below is a school TV article that addresses this issue and has some helpful hints, tips and resources to allow you to help your children build really effective sleep habits. https://lakeside.vic.schooltv.me/newsletter/sleep
