Prep

Last week Literacy

In literacy, the students work in small groups, and each group has chosen a fairytale to retell using puppets. The students can keep the same characters or be innovative and change the characters or setting. The Preps are writing independent sentences and applying their letter sound knowledge to write unfamiliar and tricky words accurately. Two new sounds have been introduced to the students 'k', and 'u', and the Preps have been practising writing the corresponding upper and lower case letters. I am very proud of the Preps identifying and reading tricky words and using their letter sound knowledge to decode words during guided reading.

Maths

The Prep classroom has been a hive of activity during Maths. The students learn conceptual place value through games using concrete materials, including counting blocks, tens frames, beads, bundles of sticks and counters. As part of the conceptual place value activities, the students are learning the value of digits in a number; for example, 12 is 1 ten and two ones, and 27 is two tens and seven ones. We are also practising counting forwards and backwards by tens.

On Monday, the students participated in an incursion presented by Bricks 4 Kids. The students explored STEM concepts using LEGO and a battery-operated motor to build a windmill. This activity encouraged the students to follow instructions, read diagrams, work collaboratively with a partner, take turns and persistence. They were proud of their windmills and their outstanding efforts.

Education in Faith

We have listened to and discussed the story that Jesus told of The Good Samaritan. The students used puppets to retell the story in their own words.
