Tennis State Finals

Congratulations to our Year 8 girls tennis team which competed in the state tennis finals in Baroondara on Thursday 17 November. It was a long wait for the team members who had progressed through to the regional finals in Mildura way back in March! But the wait was worth it! Georgia Mahoney, Lila Mahoney, Madeline Williams and Rose Byrne all played an integral part of each round at the Boroondara Tennis Centre. With convincing wins over Catholic College Wodonga and Balwyn High School it came down to the wire in a close tussle with Surf Coast Secondary College.

Finishing second in our pool, our team went on to play Aitken College in the semi finals. Aitken College were competitive and went on to win the state championship. St Joseph’s College Echuca achieved 4th place in the state! A fantastic achievement for our students.

Our students stepped out of their comfort zone and showed exemplary sportsmanship and persistence. We are beyond proud of how far these students have progressed and represented our school with pride. Special thanks to the parents and family members who came along on the day to support our team!

On Friday 18 November it was the Year 7 boys turn to travel to Melbourne to compete in the state tennis finals. After competing at local and regional competitions the boys had qualified as one of the top 8 teams in Victoria. The first match was against Rowville Sports academy where the boys played very well and Ben Henson won his set.

The next challenge was Wodonga College - this was incredibly close and the boys showed cool nerves under pressure. They won on a countback after ending 3 sets all, winning 18 -17.

The final game was against the eventual winners, Maribyrnong Sports Academy. The boys lost all of their sets to some serious competition. The boys ended the day exhausted but held their heads high knowing they had competed hard against some of the best players in the state. Well done Jack, Ben, Patrick, Mac and Archer!
