In our Special Education classes

Our Chicken story

Students in our Special Education classes had the great privilege of witnessing chicken eggs hatch out in their very own classroom. Earlier this term, sixteen fertilized eggs were delivered to us by Chicks 'R' Us.  As our students saw the crack on the surface of the eggshells, their excitement grew!  You can imagine their joy as they watched the tiny chicken struggling to come out. Students could not believe how the chick could be comfortable inside the shell for nineteen days. They watched the embryo brings its head from between its legs, twists its body and tucks its head under its right-wing, as it was facing the larger end of the egg.  All of us visited the chickens every recess and lunchtime. Nobody knew about the unique tooth which the baby chicks have to help them climb out of the egg. The students were amazed as they saw the egg tooth disappear, after the chicks hatched out.

Taking responsibility for feeding the chicks daily and providing fresh water, all students were given the opportunity to hold the chicks in their hands - this was definitely a very special experience for our students.  The chicks grew very quickly and were experts in making a mess!

Students tried to Rule the roost in taking care of the chicks and watching them grow over the two week period.  We are grateful to Chicks 'R' Us and whilst it was sad to say goodbye, we all enjoyed the time we had together.

Our students were Successful in looking after the chicks because they were Respectful and Responsible.
