Race around Australia

During term 3, all Year 7 students had the opportunity to participate in a virtual race around Australia. It is a program designed to increase the physical activity levels of school children across NSW. Students had to create an account within the Race Around Australia website and log their physical activity levels throughout Term 3. We were one of 20 schools to be invited to participate in the pilot program for 2020. The full program will be up and running in 2021.

At Cecil Hills High School we designed a 500m track around our oval that students could complete during sport and PE lessons to increase their physical activity levels. All PE lesson activities and sport lessons were also counted and logged. Students even had the opportunity to complete short exercises in theory class that could also be counted.

Research tells us how important being physically active is and making positive choices regarding being active and what foods are consumed. The aim of the Race around Australia program is to try and make physical activity habitual in every child’s lives. Embedding activity into their daily lives will instill a mindset that promotes healthy living and engaging in activities that stimulate both the body and mind.

At the conclusion of the virtual race, we had a winning class. All nine classes logged their physical activity levels and the winning class was 7G!!!! They clocked an amazing 964km between them. The following is the breakdown of distances travelled by each class.

NOTE – Only physical activity done at school could be logged. I know plenty of students are active outside of school, but the virtual program only counted physical activity completed at school.

1st – 7G 964km

2nd – 7R 774km

3rd – 7B 621km

4th – 7P 577km

5th – 70 423km

6th – 7M 372km

7th – 7S 247km

8th – 7Y 142km

9th – 7W 128km

Congratulations to Year 7G who will be sharing in a free pizza lunch supplied by the school.
