Year 5/6 News

Welcome

As we progress through Week 8 the 5/6 teachers are very aware of the fact that we only have just over a week remaining with our respective homerooms. This is a precious time tinged with sadness as we experience some of our last moments together as a group. It is also a time when the students become aware of the impending change and can lose focus on the pivotal things that we have been practicing all year such as, respect and care for each other. It is important that the children are reminded of these values as these last weeks should be a happy time and not one tainted by a relaxation in standards. We look forward to a really fruitful and rewarding end to what has obviously been a very challenging year.

Teachers in 5/6 are making themselves available next week for 5 minute Parent Teacher Chats. If you would like to meet with your child's teacher via Zoom, please email your homeroom teacher by COB, Thursday, 26th November.

Available times are:

Tuesday 1st December  3:40-5pm

Wednesday 2nd December 3:40- 5pm

Thursday 3rd December  3:40- 5pm

Zoom links will be sent out before scheduled times.

Learning Intentions

Reading

In Reading over the last two weeks the students have been learning more about Synthesising. This is the skill where students take new information from something they have read and combine it with their prior knowledge to form a new understanding. Part of this unit has been completing character inference charts where students identify different types of information about a character. This information is then used to try and form a new understanding about that character.

Maths

In weeks seven and eight of Term 4, the Year 5/6 students finished their unit on Chance and moved onto Angles.

Students participated in a variety of clinics in which they estimated, measured and compared angles using degrees. They also investigated angles on a straight line, angles at a point and vertically opposite angles. They then used the results to find unknown angles.

On Monday 16th November, the 2020 Maths Olympiad team were presented with their certificates and awards.

The OVERALL results were as follows:

Maths Games

1st Position - Carla HANLEY & Ashley XU SOMERS

3rd Position - Christian BILYK, Kimon NALPANTIDIS & Alex SALLOUM

Maths Contest

1st Position - Kimon NALPANTIDIS & Ashley XU SOMERS

3rd Position - Christian BILYK, Madison GAUCI, Carla HANLEY, Sean RYAN & Alex SALLOUM

Writing

We have been enjoying listening to the various episodes of our Podcast 'Let's Get This Straight!'. The students have done an excellent job of putting their Podcasts together and have come up with some excellent debates. For the rest of Term 4, we will be focusing on 'Writing to Communicate' and 'Writing to Reflect'.
