Your Call
Each year, WA Police's Constable Care program runs a film-making competition, with some very generous prizes on offer. Cornerstone has done remarkably well in recent years, with multiple wins as film production became a hall-mark of many areas of College life.
With a theme of 'street safety' given as the challenge for the 2020 competition, students from across the state have been producing films. The top ten were then drawn together for an awards ceremony in Perth, and four of those ten teams were from Cornerstone. Tobias Momsen, Katie Jarman, Eva Dragstra, Hannah Burnley & Hope Adams were our state finalists.
Congratulations to Eva Dragstra on winning first place, and Katie Jarman for third. These ladies join an increasingly long list of successful Cornerstone participants.
Well done to everyone involved - it is such an honour for you all to get the recognition you did.
(NB - Thanks to our roving reporter parents, Mrs Jarman and Mrs Adams, for ensuring we were kept in the loop on the night. We appreciate you both too!)
If you missed if previously, here's the link to the top film of the year, 'Face up, Phone down' by Eva Dragstra.
And here is the third placed film, by Katie Jarman, 'Alone'.
Masterchef, Camp-style.
The Cadets rotations have recently been continuing, and a new breed of budding cooks hit the MasterChef challenge. We have to say that these meals look pretty good for a camp kitchen effort with random ingredients.
When impressed office staff asked if the students deliver, Mr Cleaver responded with the regulatory Dad joke. 'No, they don't do liver, but they do chicken, and they do beef'.
Despite the bad joke, the results are phenomenal. These two dishes are 'honey soy noodles with stir-fried seasonal vegetables', and 'potato gnocchi in coconut mushroom sauce'. Dessert was a ‘brioche bun surprise with rice cream’ and ‘caramelised bananas with chocolate sauce and strawberries’. Both squads were tied in scores after the main and desserts. It all came down to the teamwork cleaning up with one squad victorious.
Absolutely amazing, students!
Historical Excursion
The Busselton Year 5s took part in a Local history excursion in town this week. A scavenger hunt with both novelty and historical challenges, a visit to Artgeo (court house and jail) and the Anglican Church, a sausage sizzle lunch and finished with the bollard quiz walking the Busselton jetty. A great day and a big thanks to all the parents that helped out, cooked the bbq and joined in the action.
Home Cooking
One of the strengths of Cornerstone is the collaboration and connection that happens across the College - and last week the Year 10 Home Economics class put on afternoon tea for the Year 4 class.
Mr Fearnley and his students were guests of Mrs Moorcroft's students and were treated with a range of tasty and healthy afternoon tea treats. From dips and vegetables, quiche, fruit sticks, scrolls and kebab sticks, there was a lot to choose from.
A fantastic experience for everyone involved.
Cornerstone Film Festival 2020
The Cornerstone Film Festival showcases students who are showing promise as budding producers and actors. With a judging panel from the region's CineféstOZ Film Festival, which has consolidated its position as the premiere destination film festival in Australia, the honour of an award is significant.

School Production 2020
The 2020 School Production was a huge success, and Mr van der Tang and his students worked hard to deliver it following an uncertain year. Written by Alesia Riches (Year 10), and performed by students across the secondary school, it was a tale that led viewers to resolve who was responsible for the Murder at Malcott Manor. The performances by students were remarkable, and highly entertaining for the audience.
Special thanks needs to go to Mrs Bolst for her assistance in so many areas, to the Riches family for their huge contributions, the Jarmens for some amazing prop construction, and to the other parents and students who aided with staging props, sound, marketing and more. We are grateful for you all.
We celebrate the gifts of our student body, and give thanks to God for those whose hard work saw the play delivered so successfully.
Library Learning
We love that our Library is a space where more than just book borrowing occurs. Engagement and interaction is encouraged, and Mrs Mapstone also utilises student work for displays.
Here's a contribution from the Year 7s. Looks fantastic!
Pre-Primary Excursion
Busselton's Pre-Primary class recently got to experience life outside the classroom, and made a lot of truly Australian friends on their adventure.
Looks like you had a lot of fun!
Masterchef, Dunsborough style.
The Masterchef concept is a popular one this newsletter, with Mr Bernabe's Dunsborough class also getting in on the action.
As part of their work on procedure text exercises, students get to appreciate the taste of writing, reading, and following the correct procedure. It meant they not only got to consider what might be a good dish, but to see it right through to the end.
A great (and tasty) outcome all round!
Year 2s hit the jetty.
Last week the Year 2 class went on an excursion to the Busselton Underwater Observatory. They rode the train out along the Jetty and then had a tour of the Underwater Observatory where they saw lots of beautiful sea creatures including crabs and cuttlefish. After riding the train back, the children enjoyed a picnic with their parents and hours of play on the Pirate Ship Playground. The weather was lovely and the children were very well behaved so it was a great day by all!
Counting Chickens
Mrs Bartley's class in Dunsborough experienced something of great excitement this week.
'Yesterday, after 22 days of waiting and keeping records our chickens started hatching - definitely newsletter worthy. We are completely besotted'.
How marvellous!
Lest We Forget
On Remembrance Day, we acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of those who served their country and acknowledge our responsibility to work for the peace they fought hard to achieve.
At 11am on Wednesday 11th, students paused for one minute's silence as is the tradition, and during the course of the day, have also stopped to consider the display that Mrs Wright and the Secondary students provided.
Lest we forget.
Periodic Table Art Competition Winners.
Earlier this year, a competition was run by Murdoch University, which asked students to create artwork about elements of the periodic table. Mr Cleaver finally has some news!
'The Year 7 and 8 students created a piece of artwork about an element - for the Year 7s it was gallium and for the Year 8s it was mercury. The attached flyer was received today explaining the presentation night is 17 December. Helena Roth (Yr 8) has her entry on the cover, which is pretty cool. Our winners will receive their certificates and prizes from Murdoch University at the presentation night, as well as having any winning entries expanded to A1 or A0 size for display purposes.'
Well done, students! Another fabulous result for your hard work.
Big Bash Cricket
Year 5/6s had a great day playing in the cricket big bash last Friday. A great day of fun, laughter and competition. A big thanks to Mr Mullally for helping out and a sensational effort from ‘Team Cornerstone’!
