NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC week recognises and celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and was held this year in the week of 8-15 November. Always Was, Always Will Be was theme of NAIDOC and which acknowledges that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.

As part of NAIDOC week, the Pyrenees Shire donated an ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ plaque to each of the Primary and Secondary Schools in Beaufort. We have placed our plaque at the entrance of our school so that all visitors can be made aware of the country on which they are working, meeting and learning, and so they can pay their respects to the Traditional Custodians of the land.

We also had a Welcome to Country Ceremony at school with a local First nations Elder, Barry Gilson. Barry was able to tell us about the Indigenous culture of this area through story and song. It was an extremely powerful and memorable experience for us all and we are grateful for this opportunity.
