Year 9 Students Participate in Student Voice Forum

On Thursday, 5 November, students from Doncaster SC took part in a student voice forum organised by the education department.  They were joined by students from Camberwell HS, Wellington SC, Blackburn SC and Croydon Community School.  Representing Doncaster SC, we had a number of Year 9 students: Coco C (9E), Berry E (9E), Jo L (9G), Katie P (9H), Hasti K (9B), Jenny L (9F), Brandon L (9E), Nishika P (9G) and Suzie Z (9C).

Students from all these schools met as a group online to discuss many topics related to their experiences this year.  Camberwell HS and Blackburn SC organised some prompting questions and activities to gather ideas and determine some actions to put in place to inform schools to support their return to school.  This allows students to think about how they want schools to move forward after COVID-19.

The students from each school worked as a small group to discuss where they would place themselves for each statement on the agree to disagree continuum.  I would like you all to consider how strongly you agree or disagree with each of the following statements.  Have a chat about these in the car or at the dinner table.  If any student would like to meet with me to let me know their thoughts, please do so.

“Online learning reversed the progress I made before being accepted, being treated equally and making friends in the school community.”

“I am happier and have a greater sense of purpose and connectedness to others after returning to school from remote learning.”

“I utilised a range of self-care and coping strategies to deal with the added pressures of 2020.”

“I have experienced disrespect at school or online.”

“I feel comfortable with myself and my identity.”

“I feel listened to and feel as if my voice matters.”
