Legal Studies in Action

Years 11 and 12 Legal Studies students had the opportunity to visit the Brisbane Supreme Court on Monday 11 July. Students were shown a courtroom and had the opportunity to sit in the jury seats and participate in a Q and A with His Honour, Judge Craig Chowdury. His Honour gave the students an insight into the workings of a District Court and his experiences as a barrister, prosecutor and judge. Judge Chowdury answered questions on whether prison sentences were adequate and if we need a Bill of Rights in Australia. The students also had the opportunity to sit in on a number of sentencings and visit the Supreme Court library. The excursion fuelled students’ interest in the legal system and provided much information and stories for many classroom discussions. Thank you to Mr Leung for organising this valuable learning experience for our students.
