Inspiring STEM+ Program

We are now two modules into our second programme cohort with a enthusiastic group of  Year 9 and 10 students. Last Thursday 26th May 2022, members from the Laing O’Rourke team presented their Sustainability Module where the students learnt about how, in construction, we must create a balance between social, environmental, and financial impacts to impart true sustainability in the projects being delivered. During the module the students stepped into the boots of some of the site teams conducting analyses for different environmental situations in construction. Then they tried putting their sustainability hats on to pitch their very best approaches to improving the Green Star ratings of different buildings types. We had some great ideas come through in the session.

We are so excited to be back to face-to-face modules that can engage students in construction through activities that we often take for granted each day. A big thank you to Casey Hansen and Georgia Byrnes who were our leadership panellists on the day, chatting all about their own roles on site in the sustainability/enviro world. Special thanks to Casey who helped us put together a presentation showcasing all the amazing things being done to protect our surroundings and  environment.

At the end of the module we tried a “meet an engineer” speed dating activity, where members of the team talked to MGC students about what they do in their job and gave the opportunity to ask questions.

Our next session is on Thursday 16th of June and will focus on innovation in the construction industry.
