Sports Report

ional X-Country – Wednesday 15th June

Our team of 20 strong runners made their way up to Bundoora for yet another cold and wet day. Our team were used to these conditions after the Division Day at Princes Park two weeks before. The 3km track at Bundoora was hillier in comparison to the previous track, but this did not deter the schools’ best runners! In the 13 years age group. April Penaia ran a strong race and came 6th overall with our 13 years age group placing 3rrd in a tough field of runners. In the 14 years we had lucy Crouch (2nd) and Tess Trigger (3rd) finish side by side once again. MGC came 1st in this team event thanks to these two and Eleanor Scoullar. The 15 years age group allowed Jade Simoni to do some of her best work as well. Finishing in the top 10 in yet another strong performance overall in the race. This also allowed MGC to finish 2nd in the team event as well that featured Lucinda Hanrahan and Amelie Rheinberger. The 16-20 years age group race was combined. This did not stop Gracie Lourey from an incredibly impressive run winning the overall race in a swift time in the 17 years age group. Luca Sherman had a solid performance as well and finished 2nd with Heidi Cannell 3rd in the 16 years age group. Our fierce sport captain Erica Brown-Yamada, placed in the top 20 as well. Our runners have now qualified for the state event next term out at the Yarra Valley.

Year 7 Sport Day – Thursday 16th June

Competitive Netball at MGC

For the first time in 3 years the Year 7 Netball competition ran back at MGC featuring both competitive and social teams. After 4 intense training sessions, our best Year 7 netball teams were selected for competition for this day. The competition was ran inside the gym and umpired with such professionalism by Georgia Moulton and Abi Marsland who are some of ours schools best badged umpires. Our netball teams were in two separate pools on the day, and both won convincingly through to the grand final. Defeating other teams from Princes Hill SC and Brunswick SC in strong performances to play against each other. At the end of the grand final MGC A defeated MGC B 22 goals to 7. This was one of the best matches to view across the day and left onlookers in awe of the skills on display from both teams. A big thanks to Eva Donnelly, Sophie Elmes and Sarah Elmes for coaching our teams. MGC will now move to Regional Finals in Term 3 Friday 19th August in week 6.

Social Netball at MGC

For the majority of the year, sport days have dodged the weather. But on this day, our social teams played outside during constant rain and cool conditions. This was amazing to see the resilience of our Year 7’s shining through on a day where all of us would have enjoyed being inside in front of heater. Without much complaint, 80 year 7’s and their amazing coaches and teachers played through the rain. Our social teams dominated the courts in convincing fashion. With many leaving the courts undefeated for the day. A big shout out to our social umpires Heidi Junge, Eva Goudie, Coco Murrihy, Hayley Darcie, Tilly Hooper, Gemma Lourey, Lucy Cresswell, Alannah Kareem and Evie Donovan who umpired start to finish. Thanks Mrs. Oddi and Miss. Miller for helping run the netball.

Soccer at Princes Park

A nice warm bus ride over to Princes Park was had by our soccer team of 15 players. This was the only time for the day where our team was showing signs of nerves. They played with such intent and concentration in all games where they defeated Brunswick, Princes Hill SC and University High in stella fashion. This was a great result for a team that endured harsh rain and fierce cold. Miss. Nicholls and Niamh G explained that it was some of the best soccer they had seen from Year 7’s in quite some time. Thanks to our coaches Isla Kyoong, Grace Fennell, Indi Johnston, Tessa Williamson, Katerina Kotsopolous and Ruby McMenomy for their cool headed strategies. The soccer team will now play at Regional Finals on Thursday 17th August at Darebin International Sports Centre in week 6 of next term.

Badminton at University of Melbourne

Our Year 7 badminton A Team of An Nguyen, Clarissa Goenawan, Maia Gurov and Chloe Sjolin-Rotzius and our B team of Perlye Lai, Ines Cooper, Stella LaPorte, Trevor Higgins, Milly Do and Bella Lapsley enjoyed a day out over at Melbourne Uni in their nice badminton centre. Our two teams were competitive throughout the day and the opposition were no match for our brilliance. The final took place between our A & B teams and the MGC A team came out on top. A great battle took place in the final as reported by onlooker, Miss. Makim who took the students for the day. The Regional Final will be on Thursday 25th August at Darebin Community Sports Stadium.

Social Badminton at Heidelberg Badminton Centre

Our social pairs of badminton players relished the opportunity to head up to Heidelberg and play in the social competition. We had 13 pairs represent the school in a day where fun was the theme. This was certainly expressed as Mrs. B reported back at the end of the day. There was a boys and girls competition that ran across 12 courts. Our pairs were well equipped during their games and came out on top in many matches over the day. This could be largely attributed to due to their desire for match play in the MGC gym on most lunchtimes. Well done social players!

Division Junior Football – Tuesday 21st June

After 3 lunch time trainings a fortnight ago, our 2 strongest junior teams were selected to represent MGC over at Royal Park for the day. Joining them on the trip were mastermind coaches Esme Keen, Lily Ellis, Brooke Marsland and Olivia Cavka. Our 2 teams began round one playing each other. There were some passages of brilliance by both teams, but it was the A1 team (navy blue) that won by a 6-goal margin. Onto the next round of games, the A2 team (Gold and blue) tried hard against a strong Brunswick Outfit and went down by a few goals in the end. This was a great test of resilience as the match was quite physical and our players recognised this. Well done to Hayley Darcey and Nova Karikari who took the brunt of some of these hard hits. Olive Chaston was also quite physical tackling some of the biggest players on the Brunswick team. The A1 team played Richmond High at the same time, and due to some inside knowledge from Mr. Opt Hoog (who spoke to the engine room AKA midfielders) our midfielders took the game on and broke the lines to penetrate deep into the forward line where our forwards converted the goals. The A1 team won 14 goals to zero. Well done to Ruby Kaye, Ava Anthanasopolous and Zara Lanigan for getting the team moving out of the middle. In the final game the A2 scrapped out a narrow loss to Richmond High. To their credit, they were covered in mud and still full of enthusiasm right to the end. It was a great display of persistence as the A2 team were able to work on their skills as a team for each game. The Richmond game was particularly a highlight for the team. Next up, the A1 team played an undefeated Brunswick side in the final round. The winner, destined to play at Regional Level next term. A tense Miss. Cameron-Martin watched on as both teams were left goal-less to half-time. Mr. Opt Hoog and Mr. Monaghan had no fingernails left at this point, as the opportunities were there, but Brunswick kept rebounding the ball out of the forward 50. To the team’s credit, 2 goals were kicked to break the game open and MGC came out on top. Well done to both teams on the day! MGC will now play at Regional Level on Friday 22nd of July in Week 2 of next term.
