STUDENT LEADERSHIP

Our Student Leadership team have been working together to choose an appropriate charity that best represents, promotes and raises awareness of each House and links in with our school values. Each charity that has been chosen will be supported by our BSC community with donations on ‘theme days’ and events that are run each term. We are proud to announce our chosen House charities for 2022.

Mabo – VACCA

Mabo has chosen the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency (VACCA) to be their house charity. As Eddie Mabo was an activist for black rights and worked on many community initiatives, such as creating schools for Aboriginal children to have their own education. The Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency is a state wide aboriginal community controlled organisation servicing children, young people, families, and community members, and have been protecting and promoting the rights of Aboriginal children and families for over 40 years. By choosing the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency Mabo is supporting the development of respect across the nation with the increased positive attitudes towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. https://www.vacca.org/

Brennan – UNICEF

Brennan house has chosen UNICEF as their charity. Molly Brennan was the first female principal of a government school in Victoria which was here at Brighton. She strongly campaigned for gender equality, especially in the education sector. UNICEF works across the globe, especially in developing states, to ensure the rights of children are upheld, specifically in their right to education. Currently, UNICEF believes that “investing in girls’ education transforms communities, countries and the entire world;” sharing the same values of Brennan house and Molly Brennan herself. By supporting UNICEF, Brennan is supporting the advancement of curiosity and excellence of girls across the globe in their educations. https://www.unicef.org/

Kirby – Minus 18

This year to best represent our house Kirby, we have chosen a charity that is based in honour of our house’s namesake, Michael Kirby. Michael Kirby was the first openly gay judge to serve in the high court of Australia and has supported the LGBTQIA+ community for many years. The charity we have chosen to best represent our house and our schools’ values of RECITE is Minus 18. Minus 18 is a charity that works with Australia’s youth to tackle social isolation by creating spaces where LGBTQIA+ young people belong and are celebrated openly. Minus 18 strives to lead change, build social inclusion, and advocate for an improved Australia where all young people are safe, empowered, and surrounded by communities and individuals that support them. https://www.minus18.org.au/

Goldstein – Go Girls Foundation

The charity chosen for Goldstein was the Go Girls Foundation. In 2008, Michelle Jobson and Rita Bottomley formed the charity to make a difference in the lives of women. It was their dream to honour women, celebrate women and connect women to each other and their communities. They wanted to empower women so they could achieve their full potential, create optimum wellbeing and self-confidence so they were more able to take responsibility and embrace their future. The foundation has started provided women with access to customised programs, workshops and retreats that focus on female empowerment and have since supported unemployed women to gain employment, assisted women who are recovering from breast cancer, encouraged women in the workplace to take on leadership roles and women in business are coached to grow. https://gogirls.org.au/
