Theme Day: PRIDE

Abigail,SRC Vice President

This Thursday we had our pride theme day. It was so nice to see everyone dressed in the different colours assigned to each year level and teachers dressed in rainbow colours.

We can’t have a pride day without addressing the significant history behind pride month and obviously the day itself.

The celebration of pride seeks to promote, educate and celebrate peoples differences and address the perceptions of what it means to be part of primarily the LGBTQIA+ community. By celebrating pride we celebrate difference and ensure that everyone is included regardless of their gender, sexual orientation or race.

The celebration of pride aligns with our school values of respect and empathy. We at Brighton Secondary students respect everyone, and each persons individual differences. To celebrate pride means to put ourselves in others shoes, or just be empathetic towards the struggles that others have had to face, specifically in the area of LGBTQIA+ discrimination.

By celebrating pride we are acknowledging the fact that people of the LGBTQIA+  community are still to this day attacked and threatened due to their sexual identity which is one that is not a choice, and this leads to large amounts of mental health problems, specifically in youth. Ensuring that people have the right to be whoever they want to be, and to self express in the ways that they want is exactly what pride is about, its about celebrating difference and equality for everyone.

This leads me to talk about what we will be doing the donations from the day, we have chosen to give all fund to the Minus 18 charity. The minus18 charity is a charity that leads change, and helps advocate for youth members of the LGBTIQA+ community, it provides opportunities for people to access education on social inclusion and help drive change in areas that need it. Although it may seem like were all done with being inclusive there is still a ways to go and that is what minus18 is about, they seek to support youth LGBTQIA+ through mental health measures, and physical measures.

As our school is all youth and inclusive of everyone, we thought it was highly fitting to choose a charity that young people can relate to.

The SRC would like to thank you all for your gold coin donations and know that the money you brought in is going to a good cause.

The clear winner for this semester’s challenge is 7S! We will consult with the group to decide on a wonderful prize.

Semester 2 challenges will include Gingerbread decorating, Lego building and a Dodgeball competition, plus others chosen by the new semester captains, which will be decided soon.
