Science of Crime Semester 1

Year 9 and 10 students studying the Science of Crime elective this semester had the opportunity this week to go to KIOSC and put their investigative skills to the test. Students worked through the Field, Biometrics and Analytical divisions to find and analyse evidence in the case of ‘Who Killed Lawrence Grey’. Was it Harry the neighbour or Sally the disgruntled ex, you’ll have to ask them to find out!

Genetics & Lab Skills

Over the last 3 weeks, all of the year 10 science classes have had the chance to go to KIOSC to employ their knowledge in genetics and learn various essential laboratory skills.

Students investigated how environmental factors can affect genetics, in particular as a possible cause of cancer.  They compared this to people how have an increased risk of cancer due to inheritance.

They used a micropipette to load gels used for electrophoresis, which is used to separate DNA based on fragment size, then observed using UV light. After this, students reviewed patient notes to determine the likely cause of the cancer, either epigenetic or inherited.

Finally, the patient DNA was tested to identify the presence of various DNA markers.  The patient profile was then analysed to determine the best treatment regime for each patient.
