School for Student Leadership
The School for Student Leadership is a Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET) initiative offering a unique residential education experience for year nine students. The curriculum focuses on personal development and team learning projects sourced from students' home regions.
This year, there are six Year 9 Wantirna College students participating and their adventure began in week 2 of Term 2. They will be away for nine weeks and so far they have surfed, kayaked, bushwalked, built bridges and bush danced. They have also met with local indigenous leaders to learn about the land and undertaking leadership skill building activities.
Students are working on their Community project which they’ll be bringing back to implement here at the College from Term 3. Follow the Wantirna College Facebook page to see more of their adventures.
The students each have a blog which they regularly update and is a great way for family and friends to keep track of their adventures. Last week, Group 2A, which includes the Wantirna College students, went on their first Expedition. Below is an excerpt from one of the blogs.

We just got back from expo! It was awesome we went on a 20km (ish) hike, it was mostly along the beach which was great and fairly easy although we also walked through bush and single track which I enjoyed a bit more as it was
faster paced and easier.
We found and oil drum along the way and it still had some oil in it, we carried it about 3km then left it with a note for 2B to continue its journey (they didn’t though, they saw it but didn’t go to it : () that was about the only interesting thing that we found on our hike.
At camp we setup our tents then started cooking, my cooking group had carbonara and I cooked the sauce after Wren cooked the pasta. It was delicious although I think I added a bit too much onion but its was still really good.
After dinner we had a campfire and I ran a reflection about the day, the team, and individuals. It went really well and everyone had some input and everyone was engaged.
After that we cooked marshmallows and went to bed. OH and also Ms Lewis came along for the hike!! - Phoenix Rigano, 9F
