Sport

Whilst the weather has not been in our favour, I am attempting each week to swap home and away games so that our players get on the field. It is very important that you watch Team App as well as the screens around the School, as changes to both trainings and games may happen throughout the week.

As a result of constant changes I am not distributing a roster for the Term however if you want to see who your team is playing (ignore Home and AWAY) then you can refer to the ISA website which has the draw for each sport.

Uniforms

Firsts Players are expected to wear full school uniform to both home and away games. The only exception is if the home game is the first game of the day. All Firsts players are encouraged to support the junior teams by coming along to watch their games.

Students who are not in a BMGS Firsts team are required to wear full school tracksuit when travelling to away games.

Cross Country

The BMGS Cross Country team will be named over the coming week to compete at the ISA Cross Country that will be held on the 25th May at the Equestrian Centre. Please check the sports noticeboard for the team list.

All runners are required to wear a BMGS singlet. If you do not own a BMGS basketball or athletics singlet, you will need to hire one from the uniform shop to compete in this carnival. Please organise this as soon as possible.

Please come and see me in my office if you have any questions regarding upcoming sporting events.

Match Reports - Saturday, 7th May

Boys' Football

BMGS First XI vs. Chevalier College

The boys came out strong from the kickoff with a hard press on the defence  and put the pressure on Chevalier straight from the start. After a beautiful cross into the box it was Luka Donnelly who snatched the first goal to open the scoring and the boys were up 1-0 in only the first 7 mins of the game. The first half was dominated by the boys, with Isaac Nicholls taking control in the middle of the park. A couple of near misses from Jett Fendall, Hugh McNair and Angus Herron almost tripled our lead.  The boys finished the first half in front and kept the same intensity straight from the kickoff of the 2nd. Max Anicic dominated at the top of the park creating some beautiful chances and almost scoring himself, but it was Angus who smashed home the 2nd goal with a beautiful shot that slid under the keeper into the bottom corner. After some beautiful through balls from Wyatt Schmold and Will Zakis at the back, Hugh was extremely unlucky to just miss out on a beautiful volley that hit the crossbar on its way down. Max and Isaac maintained the middle of the park and displayed some beautiful passing, keeping the ball in our possession. Chevalier broke through the defence from a ball over the top and were through on goal when Jack Roberson, after not seeing too much action, pulled off an incredible save that got him a huge applause from both teams. With 10 minutes to go Hugh finally got his name on the score sheet, smashing a shot into the back of net that sealed the deal and with the final whistle Blue Mountains Grammar got the win, 3 goals to nil. An excellent start to the season, playing away from home with limited subs, the win was much deserved. Man of the match goes to Isaac Nicholls, with Honourable Mentions going to Jett Fendall and Xavier Busch.

Beautiful game to watch, well in lads!

Cameron Flaherty, Coach.

BMGS Second XI vs Chevalier College

This was a great first game for our Seconds team, providing an opportunity to play together and determine strengths and weaknesses. With limited players, both Chevalier and Grammar pulled players down from their First squads so as to field full teams. Thank you to Isaac Nicholls, Angus Herron, Will Zakis and Jack Roberson for helping out. The BMGS Seconds fought hard but ultimately came away with a loss. There were two excellent goals scored by Flynn Nicholls and Jack, goalkeeper-turned-centre back. Unfortunately, Chevalier came back on the attack to score 4 goals. This has yielded helpful information for future training and games, with a need to work on game fitness and defensive formations. Player of the match is awarded to Oliver Drew for his tenacious play both defensively and on the attack.

BMGS 15s vs St Stanislaus

The BMGS Boys U15s football team made their way to Bathurst to face St Stanislaus College. Before the game it was clear to see that there is definitely something in the water out west. The St Stanislaus boys towered over our lads and made us wonder if St Stanislaus accidentally fielded their first XV rugby team for this game. Despite the physical differences, our boys made a valiant and positive effort to play well. The Stannies players scored three goals in the first half, with BMGS feeling a little disappointed at halftime. Our boys felt like a goal was coming, and they were rewarded when Jed Ackman scored from outside the 18 yard in the second half. This was then followed by a goal scored by Finn Brinkman and assisted by Otto Umbers. While we sadly conceded 4 goals and lost the game, I’m sure the lads will take this positive performance into their next few games and continue to improve!

Ewan McMurtrie, Coach

Thank you to coach Ewan for stepping in to coordinate the team this weekend (despite his injuries). The boys appreciated his support. Player of the match was Otto Umbers.

BMGS 13s vs Chevalier College

The 13s team played a stunning game of football, with great enthusiasm from some players fairly new to the sport, as well as some clever footwork up front from accomplished strikers Henry Laurie and Alton Freeman. The final score a BMGS win, 4-1. The first goal was scored early by Henry in a brilliant breakaway through the opposition’s defense. The second goal was also scored by Henry, with a beautifully sunk penalty shot (unfortunately the dodgy ref – me, made the wrong call in allowing a direct penalty, so this goal later had to be scratched from the record). The third and fourth goals were both scored by Alton. Quality support from the midfields allowed our strikers to truly shine in this game, with outstanding goalkeeping by Toby Hammon keeping the scoreline in our favour. An excellent start to the season for our 13s!

Girls' Football

BMGS First XI were defeated by Oxley College 3-1

The First girls had a challenging game this weekend, being our first time playing together and in a new division. In the first half we played more defensively, as we kept on losing possession and first touches, but our communication was high leading to some amazing passing and runs from our attackers. With 2 very unfortunate goals being scored against us the teams confidence dropped. We came back in the second half, focusing on improving our passes, positive communication and intensity, with an aim of playing more offensively. This then allowed us to keep possession of the ball a lot more and allowed Darcy, Sophie and Clodagh to have many shots on goal. Within the last 5 Minutes a free kick was called for the Firsts and an amazing goal was scored by Sophie. This being our first game we played well as a team and have a lot to improve on for our next game. Good game Girls and better watch out St Pauls!

BMGS Junior B v Oxley College

This week the Junior B football girls came up against Oxley College in the season’s first game. Despite having never played a game together, our girls played a tight, cohesive game. The girls attacked well from the beginning, with Tilda scoring our first goal of the season.  Leila followed this with a hattrick in her first game as Striker. With some brilliant defensive work from our goalies, Ash and Babette, we were able to hold the opposition to scoring only one late goal in the game. Special mention should also go to Marley for her stamina in the mid field, and to Nina and Georgia A who played in their first game ever. Congratulations girls on the strong start to the 2022 soccer season!

Netball (Rounds 1 and 2)

Firsts

BMGS 50 lost to Oxley 82

Our first game came as a shock as we went to Oxley without any reserves and some players playing out of position. We had no answers for a superior Oxley team. Effort from all our players was outstanding.

Seconds

Our Seconds team lost to Redlands in round one. With only 5 players able to play it was never going to be a win for us, however the girls had tremendous fun and fitness with a 'fast 5' match after half time.

Junior AThe Junior A’s lost to a challenging game against Oxley (34-9). Well done to the girls for not giving up, despite the challenges of the game!

  • Zoe Long (Coach)

Junior C

The Junior C's had a lot of fun and did great for their first game. They learnt a lot of the game rules and necessary skills, which will be highly beneficial for the rest of the season. Can't wait for the rest of the season!

  • Mia Underwood (Coach)

Junior D

This was many of the girls first game of netball and without training they performed extremely well. We were off to a slow start with only 5 players and very limited knowledge of the game. However, as the game progressed the confidence of the girls grew! By the end of the game the with some excellent team work and great shooting by Aroha and Amelie we had scored! Overall, a very successful first game culminating in the most important thing, that all the girls had fun!

Round Two – 7th May

FirstsBMGS Firsts 42 lost to St Pauls 44What a cracking game of netball, with the result in the balance right till the end. BMGS played an outstanding first half to be ahead by 14, with particular mention going to Eliza, Ellen, Tarana and Jess for their brilliant defensive work. After half time our scoring dried up. The stylish free scoring that Olivia and Zoe enjoyed in the first half became frustrating hard work in the second half. Nevertheless the improvement on the previous week was immense and the girls will only get better from here.

Seconds

BMGS 10 lost to SPGS 51

There was lots to be proud of and all the girls gave 110% effort in this loss. The score does not give a true indication of the back and forth of the match, with the ball travelling down the court to our goal end but not being 'finished off' with a goal. There is plenty to work on, and all of the girls are dedicated and eager to improve.

  • Viki Stanton (Coach)

Junior A

The girls faced a challenging game against Barker. Whilst it was a challenging game, the girls never gave up their determination and were scoring goals right up until the end of the game. Onwards and upwards!

  • Zoe Long (Coach)

Junior D

In game 2 of the season, the girls had a tough loss against an incredibly hard team. However the girls held their heads high and continued to play and enjoy themselves regardless of the score.
