From the Leadership Team

Dear Families,

Schools are very busy places and Greater Shepparton Secondary College has been no exception!

As a school community we have been able to surmount the challenges that COVID has continued to present and provide exceptional opportunities for continued growth and learning throughout the last fortnight.

As you will read in the body of this latest newsletter edition, there have been numerous incursions, excursions, sporting events, information sessions, career building opportunities, community and industry connections, along with celebrations of our diversity.

Greater Shepparton Secondary College continues to promote experiential learning: learning through experience and I hope you enjoy reading the details of these events, some of which have me reflecting on my own education and being envious of today’s youth and the opportunities made available.

We hope you are connected with the GSSC Facebook page, as this communication forum also showcases some of the wonderful happenings, in particular the ABC Takeover Project that screened at the Shepparton Village Cinema.

Our promise of Greater Care at GSSC was supported and strengthened by a whole school professional development day yesterday. All staff undertook training by ‘Real Schools’ around the importance of restorative conversations. Restorative Practices seeks to value and support those involved so that they feel empowered to take positive action to address the situation and move forward. Thank you to our guest facilitator Cassie Kitani.

Restorative practices will be extended to the classroom and be the basis for respectful communication, relationships and how to respond to behavioural issues. We welcomed our seventeen pre-service teachers to this session.

Our next Department of Education and Training professional practice day for all staff will be held on Thursday 2 June 2022 - students will therefore not be required to attend on this day.

Year 7 2023 Family Information Evening

There was a fantastic turnout of families and students for our Year 7 2023 Family Information Evening. Our wonderful Year 7 Student Transition Ambassadors, supported by Neighbourhood Principals, took families on a College tour. Our College Captains Bethany Guy, Rowan Farren, Dante Sinclair-Dealy and Olivia Judd were outstanding in their roles of MC. Further highlights of the evening were our Year 7 Student Transition Ambassadors Panel, who shared their experiences of beginning their high school journey, and the GSSC String ensemble, who provided background music. Thank you to all staff who supported the evening – a great event for GSSC!

Year 7 2023 College Tours.

Due to the high demand from Prospective Year 7 2023 students and their parents/carers to see the College in operation, we have made available another four tours for this term. Information regarding the tours is as follows:

Tuesday 24th May: 9:30 – 10:10am: two tours commencing from the Enterprise Building

Wednesday 25th May: 9:30am – 10:10am: two tours commencing from the Enterprise Building. Neighbourhood Principals, accompanied by Year 10 students, will accompany you on the tours. Bookings are essential and can be made via the compasstix link: https://compasstix.com/e/c2gi9ybabi

I will finish the introduction to this newsletter with a word of sincere thanks to everyone who has supported GSSC over the last two weeks. "It is literally true that you can succeed best and quickest by helping others to succeed”, Napolean Hill., American self-help author. This behaviour is what has seen Greater Shepparton Secondary College stay on the path of being greater together.
