Chinese Speaking Award achievements

St Mary’s students participated in the Tasmanian CLTAT Chinese Speaking Award evening at St Micheal’s Collegiate on Friday 13 September.  This evening celebrated the achievement of three different competition held throughout the year in Tasmania. There were many performances by students from different schools including a lion dance, Chinese dancing, traditional Chinese instruments.

Four Junior Schools girls performed their poems on stage in front of the crowd of over 200 people. Ayzia McCarthy (Year 4)  received a third place for Year 3-4.  Matilda Greenhill (Year 4) and Mia Brooks (Year 3) received an Honorable mention in the same category. Abigail Creese (Year 4) also participated.

SMC Senior School teacher Lili Sun-Christie presented some awards at the event. She is one of sponsors of the Chinese speaking competition through her business Hobart Town Tea Rooms.

Isabella Cox (Year 10) was awarded second place in the Chinese Speech and Performance category in Tasmania.  Isabella was placed in the top 10 when she performed in the National Chinese Speech and Performance competition in Melbourne around mid year.

These are wonderful achievements for our SMC girls. Thank you to parents and students for supporting this event.

Vinnies Quiz Night success

On Friday 20 September the St Mary's Vinnies Conference hosted the annual Vinnies Quiz night.

The night was a fantastic success; Vinnies groups from MacKillop, Mt Carmel and Guilford Young Colleges joined the St Mary's College community in quiz competition, sharing of food, auctions and the raising of funds to support the St Vincent de Paul Society's work to provide food, shelter and companionship for the most vulnerable in our community.

In total the night raised $2,100. Thanks to all who attended, the St Mary's Vinnies group and all the College staff who made the event possible.

Special thanks must also go to the generous sponsors who supported the event with donations of goods, services and vouchers:

Worlds Greatest Shave

Year 8 student Grace Simonetis took part in the Worlds Greatest Shave for the Leukemia Foundation on Friday 27 September. Read Grace's report below:

'I did it to help raise money for people dealing with blood cancer and to help give them a better chance at life. The money also goes towards research equipment to help find a cure.

Every day 35 Australians are diagnosed and an Australian loses their life to blood cancer every two hours.

I was very nervous to do it, and as soon as the clippers came out I had a few tears in my eyes. But I had all my family and friends watching me and supporting me. My long hair has been donated and will be turned into a wig for children with blood cancer.

I'm proud to announce the final number raised was $1,416. I would like to thank all the wonderful people who donated, I really appreciate everyone's support and know that its all gone to a great cause.'

Fundraising for dyslexia

Well done to Rhea Debnam (Year 3) who organised ‘Light it Red’ for a dyslexia fundraiser at Fort Fitness. She attended four classes from 7.15am until 10.30am, asking participants to wear red and bring donations. Rhea also received donations from family, friends, neighbours, teachers and members of the Fort Fitness community who weren’t there, raising a total of $1,060.

'It was new experience for me: I loved everything about the island – the nature was astonishing.' Elema

'We learnt many new things in a different and exciting way.' Camilla

'It was a very great experience – I loved the view.' Ornina

'What an island! What excitement to see the beauty of Tasmania by sailing in the ocean.' Joly

Kinder Athletics

The smiles of delight from our youngest students lit up the College Green at the Kinder Athletics Carnival today. They gave their best in the egg and spoon race, sack race, race with their Year 6 buddies and the highly anticipated teddy bear race. See photos from the day here: www.smc.tas.edu.au/photos/
