School Council

A note from School Council President - Mark Vassarotti

As the school year quickly disappears it is easy to forget the huge amount of work that has gone into the first year at South Melbourne Park Primary School. As Council there are numerous activities and initiatives that have been undertaken as we build towards a bigger and better school next year.

As part of that we are proud to present the findings from our survey of parents. While there is always work to be done, it is pleasing that overwhelmingly the responses have been positive. We remain either above or at the state average across the vast majority of questions.

Next year we will be able to build on these results to continue to ensure that the students of South Melbourne Park Primary are at the centre of the activities and initiatives of the Community, the Council and the Teacher group. Improvement is constant and forever possible.

Strategic Development and Engagement Subcommittee Update

The Subcommittee has been working on a number of priority actions:

– Delivery of additional outdoor play space

Potential opportunities for reaching a "shared use agreement" with Parks Victoria for the school to use some of the parkland space around the school grounds for play space and playground.  This will involve preparation of a masterplan on which we will be seeking comment/input from the school community in the near future.

– Improved safety, parking and drop-off arrangements

Improved alternative arrangements for drop-off/pick up and parking.  We have also needed to take immediate steps to respond to safety concerns at the crossing point from Lakeside Drive. The interim response has included closure of the rear gate and redirection to use the side access gate as an alternative, and we are seeking a crossing guard for this location.  An appropriate long term solution will be determined in partnership with Parks Victoria as part of the masterplan.

– Identifying priority partnership opportunities for the school to pursue in 2020 including with:

Albert Park Indoor Sports Centre (Soccer and Netball)

South Melbourne District Sports Centre (Junior Cricker, Little Aths, Auskick)

Route 1 Arts and Cultural Precinct (NGV, Museums Vic, Arts Centre)

Parks Victoria Junior Rangers Program
