YEAR 12 CHEMISTRY

YEAR 12 CHEMISTRY EXCURSION TO VSSEC:

‘As a part of our Unit Four Chemistry, the 2019 chemistry students attended a full day session at Victorian Space Science Education Centre where we were able to expand our knowledge with equipment used in official scientific research. We were able to compare our own synthesised aspirin to analytical-grade aspirin, by identifying similar functional groups according to peaks within data obtained by Infrared Spectroscopy (IR). Further to that, we analysed data obtained from High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and UV-Visible Spectroscopy regarding commercial-grade aspirin. With this knowledge, we were better prepared for our SAC, as we had further insight thanks to the university students completing their Masters and PhDs working there.’           Meliz Bilgin 12B

The laboratory work the students undertook, including the use of UV-Visual spectroscopy, High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Infrared spectroscopy, supports their assessment task for Area of Study 1, Unit 4 Chemistry.
